Girls Just Want to
Go to School

New York Times writer, Nick Kristof, shares a story of a young Vietnamese girl who dreams of getting an education:

"The head of the impoverished household during the week is a malnourished 14-year-old girl, Dao Ngoc Phung. She's tiny, standing just 4 feet 11 inches and weighing 97 pounds.

Yet if Phung is achingly fragile, she's also breathtakingly strong. You appreciate the challenges that America faces in global competitiveness when you learn that Phung is so obsessed with schoolwork that she sets her alarm for 3 a.m. each day. She rises quietly so as not to wake her younger brother and sister, who both share her bed, and she then cooks rice for breakfast while reviewing her books...."

Journey School is a Special Place

Leonardo Da Vinci

"The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding."
-Leonardo Da Vinci

Dear Journey School Friends and Family,

We hope you enjoyed the long weekend in honor of those who sacrifice so much; and, we look forward to serving your children during another wonderful week of inspired learning.

In case you missed it, we've provided a link to the OC Register's November 8th article which captures many smiling faces and memorable moments from Harvest Faire. Thank you to all the parents, vendors, staff, and community partners who made it happen.

We are poised for another special community festival this Thursday evening, Lantern Walk. The Lantern Walk celebrates the inner light and common humanity we all carry into the winter months. Together, we will eat traditional soups, engage in storytelling, and walk alongside our young children.

As you well know, a rich festival life is only one of the distinguishing features of the Journey School community. Many other defining principles set us apart as a Waldorf School, including meaningful relationships, renaissance learning, and a brilliant, developmentally appropriate curriculum which unfolds as your children come of age.

In the coming weeks, the school will provide even more opportunities and tools for you to discover the power of Waldorf Education. In the meantime, it's important that you know the rest of the world is definitely catching on. That's why we've provided the following link to an article published just last week by the Harvard Educational Letter. Be proud that you are in the vanguard of a movement that can transform American education!

This week we also have a special book faire at Barnes & Noble as we continue to promote a culture that sparks imagination and curiosity.

Onwards and Upwards,

Shaheer Faltas

Harvest Faire
by Magnus and Reid

On Saturday, November 5, 2011, the Harvest Faire came to life looking splendid as usual.  The air smelled of fresh coffee and pinewood as the vendors set up their dazzling displays of handcrafted goods.

The lunch tables had been transformed into an open dining area with draped cloth, paper lanterns, and natural influence.  Two food vendors stood hawking their products, luring in many customers with the aroma that was hard to resist.

Over by the kindergarten, the asphalt had become the fairground where most vendors had their stalls, and where the crowd was at its biggest.  A band played a lively tune adding to the splendor of the festival.  The Fairy Caf had snacks to fill your stomach while you walked looking at all of the possibilities.

Many classes had booths where the proceeds went to their class fund.  There was plenty of variation in the booths from cakewalks to raffles, face painting to chalk drawing.  Over all, the Harvest Faire was magical!

4th Grade Main Lesson Update
by Nick and Danny

This year the 4th grade has been learning about animals and creatures in their zoology main lesson block. They devoted several pages to drawings of mammals, reptiles and fish, while also listening and writing about native American stories like "Kiah and the Golden Eagle."

Each student also created their own unique creatures by combining their favorite animals.  Then they made their creations real by molding them with beeswax.
The next week the students began to learn about threefold human beings, which apparently consist of legs, torso, and a trunk. This sounded like a very interesting subject to study.

Overall, we really enjoyed learning about the 4th grade and their projects.

Woodworking Shed Needed
Our new Middle School Woodworking Class has nearly completed building beautiful benches they are donating to the school.

Students are loving this class! But we need a shed for keeping supplies readily available in order to continue building meaningful projects.
Can you help?

If you can donate or build an 8'x14' shed for woodworking please email Mr. Martin at ballmart@sbcglobal.net.
A Note from Mr. K
Journey School Games and PE Instructor It has been such a pleasure getting to know you and your delightful students! I couldn't be happier with the start of the year. So far, we have built on the good work from prior years and are now implementing further improvements for our games classes. As you may know, your students are engaged in high level activities--ranging from cooperative games that foster teamwork to street hockey, stilt-walking, volleyball, and much more.

We want to keep the momentum moving in a positive direction and could use some help from anyone who is willing or able. Specifically, I made a wish list with Dicks Sporting goods today. Anyone who wants to access my wish list may visit the Dick's Sporting Goods website and under "My Account" enter my email: rkalbhenn6@att.net and password Journey. My wish list will present itself there. I am asking you to donate anything you can to increase the dynamic movement of our wonderful school and Physical Education department. Maybe you don't mind donating a few volleyballs or perhaps your son or daughter is involved in an organized sport after school and the coaches have some used equipment to donate!

The opportunities are endless and I hope you can support us in re-building our games program during these lean economic times. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me at rkalbhenn6@att.net. Again, thank you so much for sending us such wonderful students.

Warm wishes,

Mr. K

Lantern Walk - Thursday, November 17th
Kindergarten: 5pm-6pm, Grade 1st-4th: 6pm-7pm
On Lantern Walk night, students in the lower grades bring carefully decorated lanterns created as symbols for their own individual light. They gather with parents and teachers to share a meal and story about service to others. Next, they walk together throughout campus singing and carrying light. The experience helps children recognize "the light" of one another, and gives them an experience of caring and sharing with each other.
