Check out 5 films in the Women, War & Peace series on PBS SoCal, or at Center for Living Peace. Women, War & Peace is a five-part PBS television series challenging the conventional wisdom that war and peace are men's domain. Women, War & Peace spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones from Bosnia to Afghanistan, and Colombia to Liberia, placing women at the center of an urgent dialogue about conflict and security and reframing our understanding of modern warfare. Featuring narrators Matt Damon, Tilda Swinton, Geena Davis, and Alfre Woodard, Women, War & Peace is a comprehensive global media initiative on the roles of women in war and peace. Gallery Walk
What is it?- Students will transform their classrooms into an educational "gallery" on Wednesday, October 26th. Learning displays will be on exhibition for all to see, including: Student main lesson books, writing, art, poetry, math, and science experiments. Additionally, we will share and eat delicious finger foods and have a chance to interact with teachers, staff, and each other.
- The agenda is as follows:
- 6:00-6:45: Eat, conversation, drop kids at childcare, and peruse the Gallery Walk (no food or drink in the classrooms to protect student work). During the Gallery Walk you will have a chance to focus on student work and engage in dialogue with teachers and other parents.
- 7:00: Meet in MPR for educational discussion and Q&A.
- 7:45: Pick-up children and adjournment.
Who is invited?- All current parents, prospective new parents, and community members are invited to attend. The evening is not intended for the kids. Parents are encouraged to find their own childcare as the school is not able to support the whole community.
- However, limited childcare will available as follows:
- The Morning Glory Room will be for toddlers.
- The Sunflower Room will be for toddler overflow.
- The Snapdragon Room will be for 1st & 2nd.
- The Dandelion Room will be for 3rd & 4th graders. 5th-8th graders will be asked to take on responsibilities if they come.
- There will be an adult in the classrooms to supervise the helpers.
- Again, please try to find your own childcare to the greatest extent possible. You may RSVP for childcare by clicking here.
How can each family help?- Bring a delicious finger food (be mindful of nutritional guidelines).
- Bring a friend who may be interested in the school.
- Click here to volunteer to decorate the school in preparation.

Emergency Procedures Update
Journey School realizes the importance of preparing for an emergency. This year we have taken great steps to improve our emergency plan. So far, we have:
- Updated our messaging system. In the event of an emergency, parents can be sent a text message and be called with any important information.
- Created an effective emergency/disaster plan so that students and staff are safe.
- Implemented monthly drills to teach the children correct earthquake, fire, and emergency procedures.
- Took inventory and replenished emergency backpacks in the classrooms so that teachers have supplies at their fingertips.
- Assessed the need for individual, student, emergency supplies in case children will be at school into the evening.
Our next step is to create student emergency packs that will be kept in the individual classrooms. These packs will be provided by the school. What we need from you: Emergencies can be a scary time for a child, we would like for each parent to write a letter of reassurance for your child and include a photo of your family that will be given to your child to comfort them in the event of a disaster. Please place the letter and the picture in an envelope with your child's name on it. Then, give it to your child's teacher. Please turn in these letters by November 4th. |
Hot Lunch Options
Our hot lunch options are in place and ready for orders! Take a break from packing lunches on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays and help raise money for Journey School. Click on the links to order lunches delivered on Mex Mondays, Sushi Thursdays, or Pizza Fridays. Orders are due the day before the respective hot lunch day or you can order ahead for several weeks at a time. Kindy parents may pick-up their child's lunch (come at 12:15 PM to avoid the lines) and/or Little Acorns will receive their lunches in the Kindy yard--just be sure to check the Little Acorns box! |

News from the 8th Grade
Main Lesson Highlights - 7th Grade
By Juliet McGee and Cyreine Adams
This month the seventh grade is studying the artistic realm of the Renaissance. The eighth grade was able to get a little reminder about what the Renaissance's glory was all about. The seventh graders tried their skills at Leonardo Da Vinci's own great work.
Tanya Anderson and Kandis McGee, the two 7th graders that we were fortunate enough to interview, both agreed that their favorite part so far was learning about the Medici family. The Medici family was mainly known for their grand school for artists, scholars, and thinkers. Tanya had this to say about the Renaissance art," I think there wasn't as much depth of perspective in Art as there is today."
"I think we've achieved more artistic abilities in our modern times," Kandis added.
These two girls agreed that their favorite story in the Renaissance is about two European iron sculptures who were competing for the privilege to have one of their iron pieces mounted on the church's baptistery door. The unfortunate loser of the challenge quit making iron masterpieces and started sculpting the new beautiful and famous I'll Duomo Di Firenze.
As you can see, the Renaissance was full of lots of excitement and beauty. Be sure to stop by 7th grade during the Gallery Walk next Wednesday night and find out more about the Renaissance!
