Community Outreach

Tostan: Community-led Development

Tostan is a US 501(c)(3) nongovernmental organization whose mission is to empower African communities to bring about sustainable development and positive social transformation based on respect for human rights.

Working primarily in remote regions, Tostan provides holistic, participatory education to adults and adolescents who have not had access to formal schooling.

For over two decades, Tostan has demonstrated that providing such an education transforms learners and their communities, leading to meaningful and sustainable social change.

Tostan's innovative 30-month education program, known as the Community Empowerment Program (CEP), includes modules on human rights, hygiene and health, literacy, and project management. It also employs community-led outreach strategies that engage program participants in their own and neighboring villages. Through this approach, Tostan has transformed the lives of millions of Africans.

May 15, 2011

Dear Journey School Friends and Family:

We've got more STAR Testing this week! Please continue to encourage your children to put forth their best efforts.

Want to reward your kids for all their hard work? Join us this Saturday, May 21 at our Journey School Car Show. This fun celebration will benefit our very own fifth grade teacher, Jill Murphy.

Onwards and Upwards!

STAR Testing

We are very proud of our students for all of their hard work during STAR testing. Our second round of testing begins tomorrow:

  • On Tuesday and Wednesday, Grades 2-8 will complete the Math Test (Grades 2-3 will once again have an extra day)
  • The 8th graders will also take Social Science and Science on Tuesday and Thursday
  • And, the 5th grades will take Science on Thursday

Please continue to:

  • Arrive to school early so our children are not stressed due to tardiness
  • Ensure all students get lots of sleep and great nutrition
  • Follow our media guidelines
  • Encourage your child to exert lots of effort without stressing about the end results
  • We want them to see the link between trying hard and doing well

Classic Car Show this Saturday, May 21

Come on out for some family fun at a Classic Car Show on the Journey School Campus! This fundraiser is to help our 5th Grade teacher, Jill Murphy, who is struggling with a difficult illness and will be out for the remainder of the year. Please feel free to invite friends and family!
