SOCKS FOR JAPAN
4th grade is collecting funds for Japan. To piggyback on this noble initiative, here is an easy way for your child to make a difference in Japan:
An American man in Japan is asking for small actions: A pair of socks and a care letter. There is much symbolism in this because Japanese people take their shoes off in their houses and wear socks.
Why socks? Several reasons. Many of the survivors ended up barefoot after fleeing in a hurry. In the disaster zone, feet get wet and then extra cold at night, especially in currently freezing weather. People often forget about socks in favor of more obvious items like blankets and jackets. Receiving a new, fresh pair of socks provides a moment of comfort. If those socks arrive with a caring note as well, it's very heartening for survivors. Small joys matter.
Put each pair in a sealed plastic bag. Want your socks to find needy feet asap? Speed up the process by taking socks out of bulk packaging and putting each pair in its own sealed clear plastic bag. Waterproof bags, such as Ziploc brand, are useful to people without homes. They serve a dual purpose: delivering socks in good shape, and providing a way for people to keep items dry.
Enclose a care letter. Japanese people treasure letters, especially ones from foreigners. Survivors of the 1995 Hanshin quake in Kobe said that care letters were among the most uplifting items they received. So, please enclose a letter with each pair of socks. For help composing and translating your letter, click here.

Tdap Booster Shots
For the 2011-12 school year only, all students entering 7th through 12th grades will need proof of a Tdap booster shot before starting school. This requirement:
- Begins July 1, 2011.
- Can be met by receiving one dose of Tdap vaccine on or after the 10th birthday.
- Applies to all public and private schools.
- Does not affect students enrolled in summer school.
Beginning July 1, 2012 and beyond, all students entering the 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap booster shot before starting school.
Pertussis is widespread. If your child 10 years and older has not yet received the 'Tdap' pertussis booster shot, please contact your doctor or health department. Getting a booster shot now will protect your child against the ongoing threat of pertussis and meet a new school requirement that begins in the 2011-12 school year (California law - Assembly Bill 354).
Adults are also advised to get a pertussis booster shot, if they haven't already, to protect themselves, their families, and their students.

STAR Testing
STAR Testing begins Tuesday, 5/3 for grades 2-8. Testing will occur in the mornings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Testing will last approximately 3 weeks. Our schoolwide approach to testing is healthy and balanced. We avoid undue pressure and cultivate calmness in the students while still expecting admirable results. Below are suggestions that have been proven to help on the home-front. Let's all implement them together starting now:
- Ensure your student attends school every day and on time
- Absences and tardies at this point are inexcusable (except due to serious illness, religious celebrations, or exceptionally pressing matters)
- Turn-off the screens--it's that simple
- Be sure your child(ren) get lots of sleep and eat healthy--breakfast is key
- Focus on effort versus outcome
- We want students to see that blessings and positive outcomes follow hard work
- Ensure all homework and class work is prioritized
- Encourage excellent classroom behavior without excuse
- Support your teachers when they need help
- Avoid distractions, disruptions, or unnecessary problems that sap energy
