Good Things Are Happening!
March 18, 2011

Dear Journey School Friends and Family:

Have a great weekend, everyone! Please pay special attention to the Medieval Games column, as it is especially important.

Onwards and Upwards!

Shaheer Faltas

Medieval Games - Questions and Answers

When and where is Medieval Games? Journey School is thrilled to host Medieval Games on Monday, March 21st! 6th grade students from a dozen Waldorf-inspired schools will start arriving on campus in the early morning. Parking will be scarce and traffic thick -- plan on it!

What is Medieval Games? It is a magical day that brings history alive through joy, imagination, creativity, and healthy competition. Athletes will compete in Archery, Spear Throwing, Jousting, Dueling, Steeplechase and much more!

What about grades 1-5? An exciting and meaningful field trip to nearby Laguna Regional Park -- an annual tradition -- has been planned. Please click here for directions as this is where you need to drop-off/pick-up your student at the regular times. Your class teachers will await your arrival at the park's front entrance (fees will be waived). Please be on time, pack plenty of water/food, appropriate clothing, and be sure your child has returned their permission slip.

What about grades 7-8? Since these students have already participated in Medieval Games, they remain on campus like any other day to help with the festival and to learn in class.

What about Kindergarten? Please walk your students to class at the regular drop-off time. Since many visitors will be on campus, please park further away than usual. For a variety of reasons, pick-up time is at 11:00 a.m. at the front entrance of the school.

What happens if it rains on Monday?

  1. Medieval Games will continue unless the weather is very bad.
  2. Check e-mail carefully on Sunday night and early Monday morning.
  3. The planned field trip for grades 1-5 will be canceled if the weather is bad.
  4. In this case, students will experience a regular school day.
  5. Assume the field trip is "on" unless you are notified by Shaheer via e-mail.
  6. Kindergarten students are to picked up from their classrooms at 11:00 a.m. in case of poor weather.

How can I help make the day smooth and successful?

  • Park away from campus
  • Laugh when things go wrong
  • Show up over the weekend to lend a hand
  • Thank Ms. Joy, Ms. Hodes, Ms. Spretke, Mr. Keller, Thom Dillingham, and all the fabulous folks making this event happen!

Council Corner

The Journey School Council is the governing body of the school. All council meetings are open to the public and time is allocated at the beginning of each meeting for public comment. The next council meeting is scheduled for March 24, at 6:30 p.m. To be included on this month's agenda are important topics, including: facilities, monthly financials, "sunshine" of initial contract proposal from the Journey School Teacher's Association, and certificated hiring.

The last regularly scheduled council meeting was held on Thursday, February 24. The full agenda included an update from the school's Development Consultant (who, unfortunately, recently took on full time employment, leaving this position open). She reviewed areas of the school that show potential for funding and laid out a plan for moving forward. Her report was followed by an Administrative update, which included information about facilities negotiations with the district that seem to be proceeding favorably. Larry Tamayo from ExEd gave the school's financial report. He was followed by Bonnie River who gave the faculty update. She reported that five members of the faculty are participating in the Waldorf certificate/masters degree program currently conducting at the school. There was also discussion about revised guidelines regarding class field trips for grades 5-8, which will now be held at predominantly recurring sites and tied to the curriculum of each class.

Community Supported Agriculture

Journey families can now have a large basket of organic farm fresh fruits and vegetables from South Coast Farms delivered to school for pick up.

CSA families can choose to receive a regular or large size basket of seasonal organic foods bi-weekly. A regular basket averages about 15-20 different items and a large averages 17-22 items. The large baskets also include more of certain items. Baskets will be delivered to Journey School on Tuesdays beginning on April 26th.

BENEFITS OF CSA

There are many benefits to the CSA program at South Coast Farms. Our families will have access to the freshest local foods, often harvested on the day baskets are made. The varieties of fruits and vegetables we choose to plant are selected for flavor, not shelf life or for eye appeal. Be assured that all the fruits and vegetables are certified organic and grown by local farmers! Your support is important to our small family farm, as well as the community of greater south Orange County. We are the only 100 percent, certified organic farm in south Orange County. Your commitment to be a part of our community provides your families and hundreds of other families access to healthy, nutritious certified organic fruits and vegetables grown in our local area. Your support helps Orange County's farm heritage to continue in a more sustainable, locally involved direction!

A TYPICAL BASKET

Contents of CSA baskets change seasonally, an example basket in spring quarter would include: chard, onions. beets, broccoli, lettuce, parsley, kale, avocado, navel oranges, lemons, apples, grapefruit, pears, potatoes, kiwi and cabbage. In order to guarantee delivery to our school we need a minimum of 15 families signed up. Look for information on sign-up and pricing in the following weeks. If you would like more information contact april_poggi@yahoo.com.

The hands-on 10 week session will cover the life cycle of a seed, worm, bee and butterfly. The main objective of the course is to inspire the children's sense of wonder and connection to nature.
