International Women's Day
In Celebration of the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, the Global Fund for Women (GFW) looks back over the past year and celebrates some of the extraordinary victories won by women's movements around the world. These 10 victories remind us that despite enormous odds, women are paving the way to a more just and equal world.
Click here for a list of Top 10 Victories for Women
Everyday, women worldwide are performing amazing acts of bravery that often go un-recognized. They are taking care of their families. They are standing up for their rights. They seek education. They run for government office. They raise their voices when they have been told to be silent. Through their actions, they are changing the world for all of us.
International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday. Why: Suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women's Day honors the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed.
The first International Women's Day event was run in 1911. 2011 is the Global Centenary Year. Let's reinvent opportunity for working women and all women.

Good Things Are Happening! March 11, 2011 |
Dear Journey School Friends and Family:
We continue to make steady progress securing facility arrangements for Journey School. A detailed announcement will be shared once negotiations conclude. My hope is to have something concrete to report by month's end.
It's been a challenging climb, but we're nearly at the top of the mountain. Thank you so much for rallying around the cause with such fervent commitment. I do want you to know I feel positive about the progress we've achieved recently.
To conclude, I can't help but think about our friends in Japan this morning. Their resilient spirit is already rising above widespread adversity and destruction. We wish strength upon all the people of Japan, and we embrace each family within the Journey School community whose lives have been directly touched by the earthquake. We're also grateful to the Japanese people for reminding us how triumphant the human spirit can be when challenged!
Onwards and Upwards!

New Media Literacy Program
The students, staff, and I are absolutely thrilled about the New Media Literacy pilot-program launched this month! Each week, 6th grade students participate in "Cyber Civics" classes with Ms. Graber and Mr. Keller. The focus of the class is to empower students with the necessary capacities to make ethical decisions in cyber-space, on campus, and in their personal lives away from school.
To a great extent, this program builds upon the strong moral foundation already laid in the early grades and through the middle school curriculum. So far, many schools, organizations, and university professors have expressed real interest in learning from and/or replicating our innovative project -- which emphasizes the behaviors that empower students to become wise users of technological tools.
We're currently refining elements of the program so we can effectively embed "Cyber Civics" into grades 5-8 by the time we launch school next year. Please visit the following sites if you're interested in taking a deeper dive into this innovative and proactive project:

- We have a critical reminder about FACEBOOK. While this powerful tool has many wonderful aspects that have already dramatically changed the entire globe -- including my ancestral homeland of Egypt -- Facebook is simply beyond the ability of young children to use appropriately.
- There are both legal and child-development reasons as to why Facebook restricts membership to people 13 and older. In addition to complying with U.S. law (called the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act), Facebook has created an environment designed only for teenagers and adults. The site's rules and policies are also aimed towards teens and adults. Even more important, the protection and safety education that Facebook has in place are designed for people 13 and older. As a community that respects rules, let's help our children follow this one.
- Even if your child is 13 or older, we really caution you to be careful about what you allow your child to do online and encourage you to embrace the responsibility of teaching your child to use social media wisely.
|
- We need all families to recommit to the school's overall media policy which you agreed to during enrollment. Please click here to review your commitments.
- Then, please sit down with your entire family to re-establish momentum or healthy habits. Please ask your teachers for alternatives to TV and media if you need support.
- We also ask you to have your students leave all cell phones at home. They can distract the children and disrupt the learning process.
- If you feel your student(s) must have their phone at school, they need to drop their phone off in a secured teacher basket as they enter the classroom. At the end of the day, the teacher will return the phone -- which will remain off unless permission is provided.

- Journey School is thrilled to host Medieval Games on Monday, March 21st!
- This is an all-day extravaganza at which 6th grade students from a dozen Waldorf-inspired schools -- 175 students -- compete in Archery, Spear Throwing, Jousting, Dueling, Steeplechase and much more!
- It is a day that brings history alive through joy, imagination, creativity, and healthy competition.
- In the coming days, you will receive an announcement describing in detail the logistics of the day for all children.
- In the meantime, we are so grateful to Ms. Joy, Mr. Keller, Ms. Hodes, Ms. Spretke, and the entire Medieval Games committee of parents.
- Thank you for making great things happen for the kids!!.

Garden & Ecology Program
On Wednesday Miss Murphy's 5th Grade class learned about rainwater harvesting from author and speaker, Brad Lancaster and Jodi Levine of Earthroots Field School.
Together the class measured their building and discovered it captures approximately 8,677 gallons of water per year. The students shared creative ways to conserve water, they learned where California's water comes from, and they discussed ways to capture rainwater on Journey's campus.
Look for a rainwater demonstration site in the near future.
