Garden & Ecology Program
Upcoming Garden Events
Look for more information on our upcoming compost training. Although the date is still being determined, it will be a weekend in March or April. Weekend classes will be open to parents!
A Big Thank You to the Master Gardeners!
Journey School would like to extend a big thank you to our master gardeners Erik Katzmaier and Mary Gorelick for all of their support and volunteer hours towards our Garden and Ecology program. We are so fortunate for the commitment and passion that these talented gardeners have contributed to our school's garden.
Their Contribution
Erik has spent countless volunteer hours helping with our garden design, irrigation, planter box construction, fencing, compost renderings, garden and fruit tree donations, organizing with Newport Back Bay for wattle fence harvesting, general garden upkeep and numerous miscellaneous tasks . . . to name a few things. Erik has been seen working at Journey School on many weekends. He is instrumental in coordinating the construction of the new compost bins and forthcoming Master Gardener compost training. Erik's passion, commitment, and dedication to our school's garden has deeply touched and inspired many.
Mary has also spent countless volunteer hours working with our garden program. She has generously volunteered to help garden with the 3rd graders every Friday afternoon. Last summer, Mary gave a wonderful garden presentation to the Teachers. Additionally, Mary has helped with harvesting branches for the wattle fence, built planter boxes, consulted the garden team, and helped in the native garden.
About Master Gardeners
Master gardeners are volunteers from the community, with an interest in gardening, who have successfully completed the extensive master gardener training program. After 50 hours of classroom instruction, master gardeners are qualified to help various community partners grow fruits, vegetables, annuals, and perennials as well as answer questions on soil and water management, plant diseases, weeds, insects, and eco-friendly pest control. The master gardener program is run through the University of California Cooperative extension program and is dedicated to providing information to all California gardeners.
