Good Things Are Happening!
February 11, 2011

Dear Journey School Friends and Family:

As a small Waldorf-inspired charter school in the heart of Orange County, Journey School has always been somewhat of an underdog. Consider that no other charter schools existed in the district when we first submitted our charter on Valentine's Day, 2000. In fact, Journey was the first parent-initiated charter in all of Orange County! In this way, we have led the charter and "educational choice" movements throughout the region.

This history is especially impressive when you consider that our educational philosophy and methods are often in conflict with prevailing paradigms and expectations. Yet, in the face of forceful criticism and external pressure, our community never wavered in its resolve to create an age-appropriate, arts-based, imaginative, and well-rounded educational experience for all children!

As I think about our collective journey through the years--especially during this challenging time--I feel awe and gratitude for the way so many people have safeguarded the heart and soul of this precious school! I need you to know that we're more motivated than ever to fight for Journey's core values, underlying principles, and viability! The reason is simple. Our children and community need Waldorf education. Let's give it to them!

To conclude, please look for a special facilities e-blast in the coming days. This e-blast will communicate current information about our situation and will provide opportunities for ongoing involvement. In the meantime, here are two inspiring resources which came across my desk this week. The first is an article by Malcolm Gladwell about underdogs! The second is an engaging video about the importance of knowing what you believe and why.

Onwards and upwards!

Website Update - Photos of students

As you may know, we are currently in the process of updating our website. In doing so, we will be adding images of Journey School events including pictures of our students and their families.

To ensure that all children remain unidentifiable, we will never include the name of a child alongside an image.

If you prefer that photographs of your family are not used for Journey School's website, please email us at journeyschoolnews@gmail.com as soon as possible.

Walk Through the Grades Tour
Journey School's final school tour prior to the lottery will be taking place on February 26, 2011.  Please RSVP to Julie Giffin @ 949.448.7232 x 2 or julie@journeyschool.net.

Knit, purl, knit, purl. The Knit-a-thon is moving forward, stitch by stitch. If you are interested in knitting in the evening or on the weekends, email Allison at knitathon.js@gmail.com, and we'll see what we can do.

Donations of yarn are very much appreciated. Beautiful knitting needles crafted by Journey's own Lisa Crow are available. Come sip on some soup, munch on a cookie, and chat a bit while learning to knit or taking a moment to indulge in crafting warm scarves and blankets for South County Outreach.
