D.I.Y. Foreign Aid Revolution

The New York Times recently published an article entitled "D.I.Y. Foreign Aid Revolution" written by Nicholas D. Kristof. This two time Pulitzer winning columnist and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, are also the authors of a phenomenal book called Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.

The article includes numerous inspiring stories of every day people seeking to change the world. Amongst those profiled are Eugene and Minhee Cho, the founders of One Day's Wages. One of the core values at ODW is that one doesn't have to be a rock star, famous, or a billionaire to make an impact. Generosity is for all of us. We can all make an impact in the fight against extreme poverty. Be inspired for hope, beauty, and courage!

Morning Glory News
Morning Glory children, with the generous help of many parents, enjoyed a day of carving pumpkins, making pumpkin butter, completing our painted Jack-O-Lanterns and attending our first assembly with the grades. It was a festive day of song, work and play.

Council Update
The Journey School Council held its regularly scheduled meeting last Thursday, October 28. The meeting was kicked off by a visit from Ms. Townley-Smith and four of her 8th grade students who shared what they had learned so far during their Main Lesson blocks about Platonic Solids and Geography. Members of the public were also in attendance and addressed issues regarding fundraising, enrollment and other topics during Public Comment.

Mr. Shaheer gave his administrative report, which included a summary of the successful workday that had recently taken place. Approximately 40 families spent the workday beautifying the campus. He also gave a curricular overview, explaining how all the teachers are hard at work implementing a variety of assessments across the grades, as well as conducting Parent/Teacher conferences. Also discussed, were plans underway to ensure that all Journey teachers have access to Waldorf training on-site in the near future. And finally, Mr. Shaheer shared that the "Close the Gap" donations are currently averaging $15,000 per month -- right on target.

Another development was the recent hiring of a Development Consultant, Debra Lambrecht, who is helping Journey School position itself for future fund development and growth in several areas. This is an exciting step for the school: Stay tuned for future updates.

The next regularly scheduled Journey School Council meeting will be held on Thursday, November 18 at 6:30. Members of the public are welcome to attend!

Charity Golf Tournament
Sunny May from 2nd Grade and her parents Anja and Ron would like to invite Journey School to be a part of the 4th annual Liam's Memorial Golf Tournament

In memory of their son Liam, who was born with Down syndrome, the May's are raising funds for a program that supports children with special needs. The Laguna Beach Assistance League, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, offers a cost-free Early Intervention Program (EIP) helping parents and special needs children from ages 6 weeks to 1 year. This program forever changes lives when needed most!

All proceeds from LMGT go to charity. The tournament is a scramble format: The object is to have fun! All skill levels are welcome and first time tournament players are encouraged to participate. The Aliso Creek Golf Course is a gem that promises to offer a wonderful experience!

In addition, the amazing ladies at LBAL have put together a prize loaded raffle and silent auction. Please come and join us! If not this year, then next!

Please feel free to call Anja May with any questions at 949-463-0895
