Good Things Are Happening!
August 27, 2010

Dear Journey School Friends,

What a fantastic week! To start it off, dozens of families stepped-up on an especially hot weekend to beautify our campus. Thank you so much and well done! Be sure to check out the results the next time you're around, including the:
  • tile mosaic near 1st grade
  • budding garden at the center of campus (our green heart)
  • magical kindergarten yard
  • new traffic flow in the parking lot
  • expanding library
  • new message board along the drop-off lane
  • beautiful classrooms
On Monday, we launched the Second Annual Journey School Institute for Instructional Leadership. This two-week professional development period provides valuable tools and meaningful team-building opportunities for our teachers as they prepare for the arrival of your children. During the institute, we delve into such topics as:
  • core values which lead to our embrace of Waldorf-inspired education
  • nature studies and teacher renewal
  • teamwork and trust-building
  • great math and English instruction
  • effective assessment and the use of student achievement data -- including STAR results
  • classroom leadership and management
  • partnerships with parents
Additionally, parents thoroughly enjoyed our first parent workshop of the year -- FUN with MATH! Be on the lookout for more opportunities to enhance your child's education by investing in their greatest teacher -- YOU! Along these lines, we've been carefully planning the All-Parent Community Meeting scheduled for next Wednesday, September 1 at 6:00 PM. Your presence as our parent-partners is crucial.

For those of you with entering kindergartners, please remember that our Kindergarten Orientation is at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, September 1 -- just prior to the Community Meeting. Childcare is available for both of these meetings. Click here for childcare information.

We hope this newsletter is helpful. Please let us know how it can improve. The intent is to send key information your way in a user-friendly format which flows regularly.

Onwards and Upwards!

Community Meeting--9/1/10
Only a few more days until our Community Meeting taking place THIS COMING Wednesday, September 1st from 6:00-7:30! We need the entire school community of adults to come together!

Please plan to join us to discuss important issues such as our new year's unifying theme, goals, finances, and the ways we need to step-up together to ensure our students experience a truly magical year.

NOTE: For those few families who absolutely cannot attend, a follow-up meeting has been scheduled at 5:00 PM on September 15th. Those few families who will not be present on the 1st should e-mail shoon@journeyschool.net so we can anticipate your absence.

"Close the Gap" & School Finances
WD01 The pledge-drive continues to move forward full-steam ahead! We're grateful for your commitment to public Waldorf-inspired education. Results from the drive will be presented at our community meeting on 9/1 so you know exactly how much money was raised and by what percentage of families. You will also learn how your money benefits the children, and fits into the larger Journey School financial picture. It's not too late to give for the first time, or to increase your donation amount. Contact Cindy at (949) 448-7232 or email cindy@journeyschool.net NOW! Cindy will design an anonymous and convenient giving plan for your family. Successful organizations report a 50% participation rate. We aim to shatter these numbers and need your help to do so. Please donate now--no matter the amount.

Enrollment
Enrollment demand remains high! With school starting in a few weeks, and in order to ensure a smooth start, we can no longer hold a space for anyone who has not submitted the entire enrollment packet. E-mail julie@journeyschool.net with questions asap. Please don't regret delaying!

Parent Book Club
You're invited to join a Parent Book Club! Learn about the philosophy of Journey Education in a relaxed environment. Meet once a week for an hour under the trees on blankets for a casual look and conversations around special books like: Simplicity Parenting, You Are Your Child's First Teacher, The Kingdom of Childhood, and more! Email Shannon Jachetta for more info or to sign up. Don't miss out on the opportunity to peek behind the curtain of your child's world! Fun conversations guaranteed! The Book Club meeting day (Mon, Tue or Wed) will be determined once the group is formed.
