Good Things Are Happening!
May 2010

Dear Journey School Community & Friends,

Tomorrow's May Day Faire is a much anticipated event for Journey School. It is especially gratifying to experience the fun-filled day through the lens of the littlest eyes. Our May Day Faire captures old-time merriment as it welcomes the spring, and we hope you are able to come out and share it with your children. For more information about our May Day Faire, click here.

I am looking forward to Saturday's Auction & Dinner Gala. The Auction Committee has done an amazing job preparing for this important fundraiser. Thanks to them, and those attending, the event is sure to be a huge success!

Onwards and Upwards!

Shaheer Faltas
School Administrator

In the Spotlight: Campus Beautification
A big "thank you" goes out to the over 50 parent volunteers who showed up last Saturday for Spring Cleaning! Many wonderful things were accomplished TOGETHER:
  • Painted eco-friendly murals on the recycle bin
  • Cleaned and fenced our new garden
  • Tended the gardens in front of the school and weeded the campus
  • Repaired the school's bleachers
  • Cleaned classrooms and removed debris
  • Built new planter boxes and shade structures in Kindy
  • Sanded and stained wood structures
We certainly understand if you were not able to attend the work day as so many of you already contribute to Journey school in multiple ways! However, if you are interested in adopting a campus project, please email administrator@journeyschool.net and we'll help you find some meaningful work that you can accomplish at your own pace.

Charter Petition Update
As many of you know, every five years, California state law requires charter schools to submit a revised petition. Journey School is now in the home stretch of our charter petition renewal process! This has been a year-long project and we're so grateful for the support many of you have provided. Our revised petition is well-researched and builds upon past versions, while successfully articulating our values, beliefs, mission and best practices.

The superintendent affirmed her strong support of our revised charter petition in a 1:1 meeting with Mr. Shaheer last week, and CUSD is scheduled to pass its approval on May 11th!

If you are interested in reading the petition, we will provide a link shortly.

Enrollment Demand
Journey School now boasts significant wait lists (in some cases more than 20 students) in nearly every grade, thanks to our wonderful staff and your support! This is an important marker of school effectiveness and we should be proud of the mounting support for Journey School from the community. To ensure our success, it is important that we continue to spread the good news about Journey School and Waldorf-inspired education with friends who share similar schooling values. As a best practice, Mr. Shaheer, the teachers, and a welcome committee are working together to support each new family.

In Our Garden
Journey School's garden group is having a garden planning meeting on Wednesday, May 12th after drop-off. If you are interested in being part of the committee, please contact Michelle Spieker at michelle@cherishedself.com.

At the meeting, we will discuss future plans for the garden, donations and work needed, prospective garden grants, and alliances with community garden groups.

Our vision is to create a "Showcase Garden" at Journey
School which will provide:
  • learning opportunities for our students and community.
  • garden workshops on seed planting, rainwater harvesting, composting, herbs, etc.
  • beautiful spaces for students, faculty and parents to rest, study and connect.
  • several benches, a tee pee, and a table and chairs with an umbrella.
  • harvested food for celebrations and to one day help supplement our lunch program.
  • a place for musical and theatrical presentations.
  • a place for students of all ages to connect with nature and to co-mingle.
Our primary goal is to establish a partnership between parents, students, faculty, and the community. We recognize that the garden's long-term success is dependent upon our ability to engage our whole community in this exciting project.

Donations needed:
2 small bridges (like the one out front)
 drip irrigation supplies
DG (decomposed granite)
whimsical willow fencing sections (see samples)

plants
soil
barrels
benches
table/chairs

Teacher Search Committee

The Journey School Teacher Search Committee (TSC) is hard at work sifting through hundreds of resumes in order to fill open teaching positions for the 2010-11 school year. This committee is composed of members that represent all three branches of the school -- Faculty, Council and Parent Cabinet -- and is following the same process set in place last year. This process includes each of the following steps:

  1. Job postings on both Waldorf and public education sites.
  2. Selection of top candidates based on specific criteria.
  3. Telephone interviews with the top candidates.
  4. In-person interviews with candidates who have made it through steps 1-3.
  5. Minimum of three reference checks.
  6. Sample teaching lesson observed by experienced teachers/administrator.

After each of these steps has been completed, the TSC will recommend its top candidates to the administrator, who will then recommend them to the Council for hire. Everyone involved in this process is very enthusiastic about this work and looks forward to keeping the Journey School community abreast of its progress.
