Arnold Arboretum
You are invited to attend
a unique 2-day area meeting that starts with an engaging educational program and tour at the Arnold Arboretum on Friday, July 27th. On Saturday, we head south to spend a day touring some great stops on scenic Cape Cod.  Come enjoy a casual meeting sharing experiences with fellow "plant people" in beautiful coastal Massachusetts! 

 PROGRAM OF EVENTS    

 

 Friday, July 27

Set your GPS to 168 Arborway, Boston, MA to get you to the "Jr. Arborway" across the street from the Arnold Arboretum's Main Gate where there is ample on-street parking.

 

9:00 a.m.      Coffee and chat

9:30 a.m.      Introduction to the Arnold Arboretum. Jack Alexander 

10:30 a.m.    Tour of the Arnold's greenhouse & propagation facilities  

11:30 p.m.    Conserving and Promoting New England's Native Plants,  

                    Kate Pawling, New England Wild Flower Society

12:30 p.m.     Lunch

1:30 p.m.      Seed and Seed Imagery,  

                    Julie McIntosh Shapiro, Harvard Herbaria

2:30 p.m.      Plant Breeding and Development: A Primer    

                    Bill Barnes, Barnes Horticultural Services

3:30-5:30p.m.Explore the arboretum grounds on your own.

6:00p.m.       Optional dinner with the group.

Saturday, July 28

 

8:00 - 9:30 a.m   Susanne Lucas' Garden, 9 Bloody Pond Road, Plymouth 

The group will gather at the home of Susanne Lucas to socialize and tour her nursery and garden which includes many types of Japanese maples, hydrangea, herbaceous plants and especially bamboo (Susanne's focus for over 20 years).  Susanne's company, Pioneer Plants is the North American affiliate of Oprins Plant NV (Belgium) and owner of the brand of non-invasive clumping bamboo, BambooSelect (R). We will car-pool from here to the Cape.

10:30-1:00   Bill Cannon's Garden, Main St., Brewster 
Bill Cannon has devoted his Brewster property to growing the most varied and unusual varieties of hollies (Ilex), boxwood (Buxus) and other specimens, including Camellia. He will give us a walking tour of his self-made arboretum, home to over 2000 Ilex plants, including 300 different species and cultivars.

2:00-3:30  E&T Farms, West Barnstable, MA
Ed Osmun will share his experiences and show us up-close the workings of E&T Farms, an Aquaponics Farm where they grow hydroponic vegetables and fish in recirculating systems for the ornamental water garden and fresh water prawns. They also have a Honey Bee division.   

 

The group will make it's way back to Plymouth to pick up cars and head either to dinner together or home following a fabulous two day horticultural and social event to be long-remembered!    Please come prepared for walking among the plant collections and to dress for possible heat waves, rain showers, mud, slopes, etc.!
