R. 'Vinecrest'
Rhododendron 'Vinecrest'
Research Centre in Ontario Re-opening
If you've heard of Rhododendron 'Vinemark' or R. 'Vinecrest', you may recall they were developed at a research centre in Ontario known as Vineland.  The Centre dwindled down during the late 1980s and 90s until there was no more ornamental breeding taking place.  However, in 2007, Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (VRIC) opened with fresh funding from both the federal and provincial governments of $12.5 million.  Read more about who's been hired as ornamental breeder and what the new objectives are by clicking here for an article from Greenhouse Canada magazine by Dave Harrison. Go to page 12.

IPPS Travel Scholarships Available

The IPPS International Board has set aside funds to be used to facilitate travel for members to another IPPS region. The funding arrangement is for a dollar-for-dollar match up to US $2000 for any one scholarship; put simply, a region or member puts in $2000 or part thereof and has it matched by the IPPS International board. While the Eastern Region cannot provide funds this year, members are free to have their own funds matched or to seek sponsors.   Click here for details.  Questions? Alan Jones will coordinate this effort for interested Eastern Region members.

 Revisit Substrate Quality
Guidelines in 2010

Be on the lookout for changes in pine bark supplies this year and test your finished substrate mix to ensure that the quality guidelines set for your nursery are still maintained over time.   Prevent poor quality later by revisiting your substrate quality guidelines before potting this spring. Anthony LeBude and Ted Bilderback of NC State give detailed but nursery friendly methods for measuring EC, pH and air filled porosity of growing media.  Click here for more.
