Dear Friend,
I'm experiencing a lot of contrasts these days. This weekend I'm in Minnesota where there's snow on the ground and the thermometer reads 7oF. And my computer tells me that at home in Austin, TX it's 70oF! As spring approaches this time of year the dramatic shifts between the cold fronts and the warm fronts lead to volatile weather, and sometimes real destruction.
And there are other contrasts as well. A few of my friends losing parents in death this week is very sad. But a new grandchild on the way and a colleague taking maternity leave reminds me that a new baby is God's opinion that the world should go on!
Is it the end? Or is it the beginning? I think it's both.
Is it too late? Or could it be too early? I think it's neither!
Think with me about what the gospel has to say about endings and beginnings, about too late or too early. There is much to be encouraged about!
Be sure to read the Ministry Update section at the end of this letter. Our ministry family is growing, and we enjoy hearing from you what these letters mean to you. Our website and radio program are also growing! There is much to share with you. So keep reading!
Sincerely, Carol Tanksley Totally Free Ministries

Too Late? Or Too Early?
- Starting Fresh Today
Is It Too Late?
Sometimes it feels like it's too late for my patients. It's not that they're about to die, but so often the people I see as a doctor are coming to get help too late. It's not that I can't help them, or don't want to. It's just that often the problem didn't need to happen in the first place.
Yes, the healthcare system has become a sickness-care system. It can be difficult to afford medical care, and difficult to access care as well. And yes, there are some medical problems that cannot be prevented.
But too often I see patients who want a magic fix for something they spent a long time causing themselves, knowingly or unknowingly. And many times there's just no perfect fix available. As medical professionals we do our best to treat problems that arise, but there are limits to what medical science can do.
We get into trouble when we expect God to reverse the effects of our decisions and lifestyle. God does not often eliminate the results of our behavior. He usually gives us the dignity of experiencing the consequences of our choices.
You might consider that bad news. But it isn't! Even when we've made a mess of things, it's never too late to make positive changes. And those seemingly small changes often add up to significant benefits. God's grace is strong to support you in doing what you CAN to live right.

If you have spent a long time living badly, reversing course may feel overwhelming. But may I remind you that you didn't get here in a day. Simple small changes in the right direction often have amazing results. Here are a few things we know, humanly speaking, that are manageable, and within your power to change:
- If you're overweight, losing just one pound takes four pounds of pressure off your knees. Losing just ten percent of your body fat decreases your risk for diabetes, improves your cholesterol and blood pressure, and may greatly improve a woman's reproductive function.
- If you're a smoker with bad lung disease, quitting now will stop further deterioration and may allow significant improvement of your lung function. Your blood pressure and heart function will improve. And even after getting lung cancer, if you quit tobacco you'll live longer.
- If you're sedentary, just 10-15 minutes of physical activity will start to increase your metabolism, will increase blood flow and oxygen levels in your body, and will improve your mental functioning and muscle strength.
- If your family is fragmented, eating together just twice a week will improve communication, lessen the chance your teens will get into trouble, and probably improve your nutritional health as a bonus.
So you see, it's never really too late! Perhaps there are some things that are permanently lost, but that doesn't mean healthy changes won't benefit you now. The message of the gospel is that you CAN begin again, from where you are right now. You combine your determination together with God's miraculous grace - wonderful things can happen!
Never Too Early
In the medical field we have focused so much time, effort, and money on treatment and cure, often to the detriment of prevention. I think most of us realize now that the majority of what we spend our healthcare dollars on - heart disease, many cancers, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, stroke, STDs, unwanted pregnancies, addictions, etc. - could usually be prevented so much easier than treated.
Living right prevents so much heartache in the future, not to mention money! Though it may never be too late, it's also never too early. It's never too early to develop healthy eating habits, be physically active, learn how to handle stress wisely, manage our emotions, take responsibility for our behavior, and develop a healthy relationship with God.
Starting out right pays off well down the line. Diet and exercise habits in childhood impact health for decades to come. Skills learned such as a second language, sports, or music give opportunities that never go away. Character developed early prevents so many heartaches in the future.
And also, don't fall into the trap of believing it's too early to worry about doing it right. What you do today WILL have an impact on the future - of your health, of your happiness, of your peace, of your family, of your usefulness in the world. If you need to make some changes and do some things better, there's no time like the present.
If I could look into your eyes as a young person, I would say with all the earnestness I could display, "Don't wait! The relatively little problems you struggle with now will be so much easier to deal with while they are still small. Don't wait until you get older and have regrets. You may think your lifestyle won't catch up with you, but it will! If you need help to change, get help. But don't wait! God can do so much with a young person willing to live for Him - in every way!"
And if I could look into your eyes as an older person, I would say with a heart full of compassion and hope, "It's not too late! You may regret some of the things you've done, some of the ways you've lived. But don't give up! Today is the start of the rest of your life. God loves you. He's not finished with you. Whether it's your physical health, your family, your emotional health, your spiritual life - there's still tomorrow. God's grace can redeem what you thought impossible. It's not too late!"
Never Too Early: Never Too Late
God is a God of second chances. So don't worry that it's too late. And remember that it's never too early to learn to do it right.

Is it hard? Yes.
Scary? Perhaps.
Guaranteed? Not always for the outcome
you may want.
But do you have to do it alone? Never!
Is it hopeless? Definitely not!
Give God a chance. Give yourself a chance! You mean so much to God and His Kingdom. Start today.
Until we speak again, in Christ's love and freedom,
Dr. Carol Tanksley

Ministry Update
It's usually afterwards, but it still warms my heart every time: we are hearing from more listeners than ever to the Dr Carol Show, that a given program in some way touched their life. It may be a story that gives someone hope. It may be a medical issue that has troubled them that now they understand. It may be a family member who struggles with an issue we talked about. It may be someone who is encouraged and motivated to live better. It may be a resource we talk about that provides just the help someone needs. Someone hears, "It's never too late!", or "It's never too early!" And that's the whole reason we do what we do.
The difference Jesus makes in our lives is amazing. And we get to talk about that every day! He came to give us a life beyond anything we could experience on our own - a life of courage, joy, health, purpose, and love. It may not be easy, but we can thrive because of Him. And we can make a difference for His Kingdom. That's what we experience every day, and what we pray for you as well.
We are now experiencing something wonderful at the Dr Carol Show. Other radio stations are asking about having us on in various areas around the country. Pray with us that God grant us the wisdom and the resources to grow in a way that would bring honor to His Kingdom.
We invite you to regularly go to our website www.drcarolshow.com, check out the regularly updated features, and be part of our family there also. Our "What's New" is updated almost every day, and we have new information on our blog posts several times a week. We would love you to visit, to comment, and to share with your friends. We hope you will check back often. And if God speaks to you to support us financially you can do so on our website here, or send your donation to the address at the bottom of this letter.
And now, I pray you experience the empowerment of Christ living within you - that you would know His purpose and will for you, and that you would live that out, today and tomorrow. May you leave your regrets at the cross, and follow His leading in every part of your life from this day forward. May you know the joy of working together with Him as you live the life Jesus came to give us! |
