What Breaks Your Heart?
Ministry Update

Dr Carol Letterhead
Dear Friend,

It's the beginning of a wonderful New Year. The flurry of the holidays is over, and the after-effects may be wearing off. Perhaps you've been through an emotional high, and are feeling a bit of an "emotional hangover." Or perhaps the holiday season was a real disappointment, and you're glad it's over. However it went, this new year is an opportunity to begin again. And isn't that the message of the gospel, that you CAN begin again? God's mercies are new every morning! (Lam. 3:22,23)

As you look forward to this year are you: Excited? Scared? Frustrated? Calm? Anxious? Tired? Confused? Or hopeful? One of the things making an unknown future uncomfortable is being unsure of what our place is in it. Much has been written about finding your purpose in life, and I'd like to talk with you about making that happen in your life, and the impact it can have for your future.

Be sure to read the Ministry Update section at the end of this letter. Our ministry family is growing, and we enjoy hearing from you what these letters mean to you. Our website and radio program are also growing! There is much to share with you. So keep reading!

Sincerely,
Carol Tanksley

What Breaks Your Heart?
     - Finding Your Purpose

An Accident?

Remember the movie Forrest Gump? Near the end Forrest muses, "I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both." I don't believe it can be both. Our lives may often feel like an accident, but it only appears that way. And when bad things happen it becomes especially difficult to believe we are anything else but an accident.

Forrest Gump            It's true that accidents do happen. We live in a messed-up world where pain and misery and sickness and death happen. Thank God we know the end of the story, and that He is with us always! But the pain along the way can be hard to take.

If you view your whole life as an accident all the "stuff" that happens just feels like a cruel joke. You can so easily fall into the trap of living for pleasure, or money, or power in trying to survive. Or you can also easily become disillusioned, quit trying, and live a life of quiet desperation.

But if you ARE here on a destiny - WOW! That changes everything! You can handle a lot of "stuff" if there's a reason. Even if you don't know exactly what the reason is, just knowing for sure that there is one can help you get through it all. How can you know that? How can you know what your destiny is, what you were put on this planet for, and what you're supposed to do in this life?

Heartbreak Happens

Everyone feels heartbreak at some point. And unless you're a sociopath or extreme neurotic you probably feel someone else's pain as well. And that's actually a good thing! In medicine, pain is often a sign that something is wrong. It gives both doctor and patient information about what is broken, and hopefully where to look for what needs to be fixed. Broken Heart

In looking for your destiny, for your purpose, of course there are personality tests, career counselors, spiritual gifts inventories, and more. And they can sometimes be helpful. But there is one question that may get you closer to the answer than just about anything else.

And here it is: What breaks your heart? Whose pain do you feel? What has your life experience sensitized you to that you just can't get out of your soul?

When you recognize whose pain you feel, you likely know what problems you are created to help and whose brokenness you are uniquely able to help heal. The heartbreak YOU have experienced is likely to be the very thing that God can use to bring blessing to others.

If you know the pain of addiction and feel the heartbreak of those struggling to break free, you know the kind of people you can speak to. If the children dying from disease because of the lack of clean water in certain countries keeps you awake, you know the kind of charity and mission to get involved with. If battered women, human trafficking victims, young adults who don't know how to read, homeless families, or those struggling with depression get under your skin, you know who God wants you to help.

I personally know many people who illustrate how heartbreak can turn into healing. I know two women who experienced serious mental illness who now work with a state-wide organization developing programs to help others with mental illness. I know an ex-convict now encouraging "at risk" youth through numerous sports programs. I know a man who has lost part of his foot to diabetes who now passionately speaks to others about keeping their disease under control. I know a young woman who lived homeless and addicted for some years who now coaches others out of similar situations.

Need a Biblical example? How about Paul - so wrapped up in religious legalism that he missed recognizing the Messiah, and violently fought against Christians and the Church for years. Once he met Jesus he became the greatest champion for freedom in Christ, and worked to spread the very message he had worked so hard to stop. (Gal. 1:13-16)

Another one? How about Esther, the orphan girl living in a foreign country, certainly feeling the pain of her people. She then became the very one God used to save her people from extinction.

What Breaks Your Heart?

 Young man with purpose

God has put you here for a reason. Do you know what that is? Whose pain do you feel? What problem breaks your heart? Whose struggle do you understand?

There's nothing more fulfilling and joyful than seeing what God has built into you make a difference for someone else. Every experience you've been through, everything you've learned, every mountain you've overcome, every valley you've come through, and everyone else's pain that you feel is part of what God then uses. He created you - not only when you were born, but He has continued to create you throughout your life. For a reason!

So, think about it. What breaks your heart?

Now, what are you going to do about it?

Until we speak again, in Christ's love and freedom,

Ministry Update

We are looking forward to great things in 2012. And we pray you are too. Many have talked about this year being one of great challenge, crisis, and danger. Only God knows, but the signs are there. But when crisis comes, there is great opportunity for God to act, and for you and I to do great things for His kingdom. God has you here for a reason - in 2012! Live it to the fullest that you can.

The Dr Carol Show is now on another radio station! We are now broadcasting a Weekend Edition - the Best of the Dr Carol Show, on AM 1300 KSET in Beaumont/Pt Arthur, TX, 4-6pm on Sundays. If you're in that part of the country, join us! And of course you can always join us 2-4pm Mon-Fri during our regular program time. And remember, nothing we do is nearly as powerful in letting others know about our program and ministry as YOU telling someone. Please do so!

We have added a number of new features to our website, and more are coming. The biggest new feature is our blog, which allows you to comment on many of the issues we talk about in these letters and on our radio program. Go to our website www.drcarolshow.com, or go directly to our blog post with some of the thoughts from this letter. We invite you to comment there, and to share with your friends. We hope you will check back often, and comment regularly.

And now, I pray God takes the breaking of your heart and uses it to heal others. May you know the thrill of His creating you to be useful, and the joy of knowing the purpose for which He created you - and is STILL creating you. And may His grace and strength fill you daily throughout this New Year.
