FIRST NEWSLETTER
THROUGH NEW DATABASE!

As you know by now, The Oregon Pediatric Society membership database has been removed from the AAP annual renewal process. This is our FIRST newsletter processed through our our new membership data reports, so we now hope to be reaching all our members fully and effectively.

As one last reminder, if you have recently received a bill from the AAP for membership renewal please do not pay the Chapter portion as we will be billing you directly this month and moving your membership to a calendar billing cycle.  Any questions about your membership can be directed to our membership coordinator, Maria Sleeman, at [email protected]

"First Tooth"
Preventing Early Childhood Caries through Medical and Dental Provider Education and Collaboration

The Oregon Oral Health Program in collaboration with the Oregon Oral Health Coalition's (OROHC) Early Childhood Cavities Prevention Committee (ECCP) is working on a three-year workforce development project called "First Tooth". The goal of the project is to reduce early childhood caries, known as tooth decay, in Oregon by training medical and dental providers to implement preventive oral health services for infants and toddlers ages three and under.

In addition, "First Tooth" works to
establish collaborative relationships between medical and dental providers so that all children have access to a dental home. "First Tooth" offers a no-cost CME training to medical and dental providers that is designed to...

DEVELOPMENT

HELP OPS
at no cost to you!

Please register at www.goodsearch.com and input 'Oregon Pediatric Society' when asked for the charity you would like to benefit. Then, instead of using google or yahoo or any other search engine when conducting web searches,
use www.goodsearch.com (change your web settings so this opens as your homepage or default search engine) and every time you do a search, OPS will earn 1cent! Thank you so much for making this small change that can make a big impact on a small non-profit.

The Development Committee continues to send out fundraising letters, accompanied by case statements, to potential donors as well as our members.  Please read through the materials if you receive a packet and provide us with feedback!  View the INSIDE and OUTSIDE of our online version and feel free to pass it on to anyone you believe may be interested in investing in a great cause.  Contact us if you would like to request any hard copies.

REACH OUT AND READ

In partnership with the national Reach Out and Read program, OPS has started an Oregon ROR coalition.  We are in the initial phases of setting the groundwork for this program and will contact clinics as services become available. Please keep your ears open over the next 6-12 months for information on how your clinic can get involved!  Meanwhile, if you would like to get involved or donate to this special cause and thus help the program get started as quickly and efficiently as possible, please go to www.oraap.org/ror for more info.  Thank you!

START

Please contact Abby Engebose if you would like to have a START training at your location!

*Please remember, MOC and CME credit are available for our trainings*

PEDIATRIC COUNCIL

Contrary to what you may have heard 96110 will continue to have RVU assigned by CMS. This was a reversal from decision in late 2011. Our survey of practices revealed that most health plans are covering. Some plans need −59 modifier to stop from being bundled with E&M visit codes. CCO implementation plan for Oregon state medicaid has been published and will be going to the legislative this session. The goals are to bring medical, mental health, and dental together under one global budget in a region. Each region will likely be structured a little differently, and some urban regions may have more than one CCO. If passed by the legislature reorganization will begin as early as July 2012.

Anyone interested in practice management issues contact [email protected] to get on our email list.  We are building a list serve to share questions and solutions.

MEMBERSHIP

The membership committee is currently contacting lapsed OPS members to request that they renew their membership. They will also be moving forward on several recruitment and retention efforts this month!

MEDICAL HOME

Thanks to the members who responded to our medical home survey. We learned that 25% of those that responded are already working in a clinic that is certified, many already under the Oregon criteria. Barriers you identified included: lack of time, concern the process is overlying bureaucratic, lack of EHR, need for more information on the process, and need for more information on the benefits. Keep an eye on our website as we continue to add to our practice management and medical home resource page. We are reviewing the responses and will use them to look for opportunities for the OPS to support pediatric practices who wish to pursue medical home certification.

OPS has additional active projects and committees..
