Twin Cedars' Board Members
Make It Happen

George R. Moore

 Mr. Moore 2

George R. Moore is a true servant leader. Serving as a Board Member for Twin Cedars Youth & Family Services, Inc. is only one of his many contributions to LaGrange and Troup County.  Mr. Moore is a retired educator who has shaped the lives of countless children and youth in the community. In fact, Twin Cedars' Specialized Foster Care program in LaGrange, Georgia, bears his name.  He also served as a member of Troup County Board of Assessors for 12 years,  as well as a LaGrange City Councilor until 2007.

Most recently, he was honored at a dedication ceremony at which Fire Station No.#1 located on South Davis Road was renamed in his honor.

We are grateful to have Mr. Moore as a committed member of the Twin Cedars Board!

State Representative Debbie Buckner

Representative Debbie Buckner

Debbie Buckner juggles many tasks. She is a Georgia State Representative who serves House District 130, a wife and mother of three children, and the former Director of Community Benefit at Columbus Regional Healthcare System. In addition to her responsibilities of family and public service, she also finds time to serve as a Board Member for Twin Cedars Youth & Family Services, Inc. As a TCYFS Board Member, she volunteered to secure a location and sponsor for Twin Cedars' Annual Board Meeting held in August. With her help, our Board and Leadership Team were able to gather to conduct all necessary business and layout plans for the future. We appreciate all of Rep. Buckner's assistance in organizing such an important meeting.

Bradfield Residents Remember 9/11;

A Powerful and Moving Event

Remembering 9/11

Etched in our memories forever will be the horrific events of 9/11.  Each year in New York, our country commemorates those who were lost by the annual reading of the names of the more than 2,700 victims. Even though the majority of our residents living at the Bradfield Center are too young to recall the events, they too wished to pay tribute. Through their own special ceremony, residents gained a greater understanding during this Day of Remembrance through personal stories and prayers shared by Bradfield staff.  A balloon release concluded the event.

Program Director, Dr. Kim Bond commented, "I was so impressed with the attention and respect all the students were giving - they were so young with this happened, yet they appeared to be so touched by today's ceremony."

A special thank you to Etta Billinglea, Mary Banks and other team members for making this event possible.

Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home Staff Members
Celebrate Years of Service

Lynne Lynne

AESH Program Director Lynne Taylor with Mavis Dorsey and Lynne Gaddy.

During last month's Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home staff meeting, two longtime employees were honored for their many years of service to the organization.  Mavis Dorsey was presented with the 10-Year service award.  Mavis is the Food Services Coordinator for the Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home.  She ensures that girls living at the home receive three nutritious meals and two snacks each day which is equivalent to approximately 43,800 meals and 29,200 snacks annually.  Her responsibilities also include overseeing overall food services operations for the campus. Lynne Gaddy, a 15-Year veteran to the Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home currently serves as Admissions Coordinator for the home. She is responsible for overseeing all referrals to AESH, coordinates preassessment interviews and assists in many additional areas of campus life.

Congratulations to both of you for your many years of dedicated service!

Leadership Columbus

Cheryl Leadership Columbus While some of you may think that leaders can only acquire  training in an office atmosphere, at Twin Cedars we disagree. Some of Columbus' newest and brightest professionals from Leadership Columbus recently experienced
Challenge By Choice; an outdoor Ropes Course located on the campus of the Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home. The talented group was introduced to engaging on the ground elements as well as higher, challenging elements.  Our hope is that individuals leave the experience with a heightened sense of self, as well as a more developed knowledge of their role on the team. Trained facilitators helped the group acquire an improved sense of identity,  cohesion, purpose, and confidence in taking risks.  Participants are able to evaluate their efforts and return to  their  workplaces or communities better equipped to meet new challenges.

Foster Care Picnic
Chattahoochee CASA Helps Foster Parent Association  Provides Back To School Supplies At Annual Picnic

Casa advocates were armed with book bags full of school supplies at the annual Foster Care Picnic.  With book bags donated from Office Depot, CASA advocates held a drive for school supplies and gathered paper, pencils, pencil boxes and other items.  Local author T.L. Blythers also donated copies of  her first book, Mika Dika, which depicts a child's story of life in foster care. Back to school many times means more than just paper and pencils.  It is the transition from summer to fall requiring children have new clothes and shoes. By offering book bags and supplies, CASA has helped ease the financial burden of many foster parents as well as provide children with the tools necessary for learning.

LaGrange College Volunteers
LaGrange College Students Volunteer

We would like to thank students from LaGrange College for their volunteer service at the Bradfield Center in LaGrange. Each year, they work to help us organize gently used clothing that has been donated to our youth.

Thanks to donations from the community and  volunteer service we'll be prepared for the coming months that promise to deliver much colder temperatures.

HHS
Hardaway High School's Servant Leadership Class Visits  The Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home
Hardaway High School is taking volunteerism and leadership to a new level. As a part of their new Servant Leadership Course, students recently visited the Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home to learn more about how abuse affects our community. Twin Cedars' Marketing Coordinator Tiffany Wilson, offered a 30 minute presentation about the AESH, and students were given a tour of Butler Cottage.  By learning more about Columbus and visiting local charities, these students can help make an impact at an early age.
Summer 2011 CASA Class
Summer Training Is Complete; New CASAs Are Sworn In

Following 30 hours of classroom instruction, as well as 10 hours of courtroom observation, Chattahoochee CASA's newest class of advocates are officially ready to begin their advocacy work.  A swearing in ceremony at the local Juvenile Court led by  the Honorable Warner Kennon, Sr. was held last week to confirm the group's desire and willingness to help children involved in juvenile court deprivation hearings.   A Court Appointed Special Advocate  is a trained community volunteer appointed by a judge to speak up for the best interests of an abused, neglected or abandoned child involved in a juvenile court deprivation proceeding. Bringing urgency to a child's needs, both in and out of a courtroom, CASA volunteers advocate for safety, permanence and well-being  for children through independent recommendations. The next training begins on October 11th.   If you are interested please contact Rosalind Alston at 706.327.9612 or by email at

Finding Words Training

Both Penny Green and Nicole Lee, who both work at Children's Tree House, recently completed Finding Words Training. During the week long program, staff attended workshops to learn how to effectively utilize drawings, anotomical diagrams and dolls as aids for children to explain their experiences. Our new forensic interviewers are now trained to employ non-leading child abuse interviewing techniques which are legally sound and ensure the interviewer's objectivity. All forensic interviews are recorded and submitted to authorities for investigation and prosecution.

New part time Child Advocate Nicole Lee stated, "Finding Words Georgia is an intense training that can benefit individuals who work with children in all aspects of life. The completion of this training has brought a greater understanding of how children experience sexual abuse and why they do or don't disclose.  I can now truly say that I am confident in my ability to communicate with children and can see great purpose in knowing the role I play in this process."

Children's Tree House serves the six county Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit.

AESH Staff Offers Heart Health Program For Its Residents
Left to Right: Mavis Dorsey, Harold Childs, & Curlie Brownlow

Exercise is commonly known to help control weight, combat heart conditions, boost energy and reduce stress.  In an effort to help residents reduce stress and promote healthy lifestyles, the staff at AESH has introduced the 100 mile Walk Club as a part of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Initiative.  The goal: to walk 100 miles each month.

During the month of August the girls at AESH logged 1,438 total miles.

We would like to congratulate Shaniah for completing 138 miles and Le'nique for completing 101 miles.

Keep up the great work!

Real Committee Biking

REAL COMMITTEE At GICH Participates In
Mountain Bike Training

On Saturday, September 24, GICH REAL Committee members had their second Mountain Bike Training conducted by Mr. Stuart, a former Macon Police Officer. The GICH campus has three and a half miles of mountain bike trails used by many local and state mountain bikers. The first training focused on "Knowing Your Bike" and "Bike Safety." The second training focused on using the "7 Gears" and included a few hours  of riding. GICH bike trails are competition trails with tough terrain and obstacles. The resident bikers are building biking skills and strength before heading for the trails. A special thanks to Mr. Stuart for taking on the Bike Project with the guys. A special thanks to Sheila Cloyd for her help in organizing the trainings.
