Columbus area educator and Chattahoochee CASA volunteer, T. L. Blythers, has recently written and released her first book- Mika Dika: Foster Kid
Mika Dika is a well-written and beautifully illustrated children's book about a young girl who enters the foster care system and endures many challenges while waiting on a permanent home. Blythers commented, "As an advocate, I see that their voices are being lost in the throes of the system. I want to build a higher hedge of protection around all children, not just foster care kids." This is Blythers' first book and it is slated to become a series. Visit www.MikaDika.com to learn more.

Dear Friends,
This morning I received an email that was particularly moving. Bradfield Center's Partners In Education, American Home Shield, received quotes from many of their employees who recently visited the Bradfield Center in LaGrange to deliver blankets and gift cards to the residents and goodie baskets to our staff. We'll open and close this special Holiday Newsletter with those quotes.
Wishing you a joyous Holiday Season!
For the Children,
Mike Angstadt, Executive Director
"This is my favorite quote; as we do tend to put kindness, giving and love to others away like a box on the shelf only to pull it out when we feel like it." Christmas is forever, not for just one day for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do for yourself...
~ Norman Wesley Brooks, "Let Every Day Be Christmas, " 1976 "What a true blessing I received from visiting and meeting the staff and boys at Twin Cedars. I still get goose bumps when I think back, as I am now as I try to describe the joy that all of you at Twin Cedars have given me this Holiday Season. I hope to take this with me and not let the experience dim within my heart. Any words I can put on paper fail in comparison to the feeling I have in my heart for Twin Cedars." Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home Celebrates Holidays with a Christmas Tea
The holiday season is a busy time of year for the girls living at the Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home. Thanks to the volunteers of the AESH Auxiliary, there are an array of events that have been planned so that the residents can experience and enjoy this special season to the fullest. The Auxiliary recently hosted the Annual Christmas Tea at First Baptist Church in Columbus. Through the fundraising efforts of this devoted group of volunteer women, each resident was given a $25 gift certificate from Target.
The Auxiliary has also hosted a Christmas luncheon this month that included the family members of the girls.
Our volunteers make ALL the difference!

Children's Advocacy Center of Troup County Celebrates Thanksgiving
The month of Thanksgiving was a special time for the families served through the Children's Advocacy Center. Throughout the month, our Mission Year Volunteer Christin Babcock, worked with families to create Thanksgiving art work which proudly adorned the walls of the CAC. Families, staff and other contract service providers also created a banner which gave us each the opportunity to express what we are thankful for during this most sacred holiday. On the evening of Monday, November 29th, all of the families served through the Family Visitation Center joined in a Thanksgiving meal of turkey, dressing and all the trimmings that had been prepared by staff. The Coleman Board Room allowed all 40 or so people the opportunity to sit around the table together and enjoy the fellowship of having a meal together. Our Thanksgiving blessing was delivered by a 9 year old foster child that moved us all to tears. This annual Thanksgiving meal tradition is a reminder of the strength-based, family focused mission that is at the very core of the broad array of service delivery within Twin Cedars. Meeting the Needs .... Meaningful & Lasting Donations from ALPHA PHI ALPHA Fraternity, Inc. | | Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Members |
The Georgia Industrial Children's Home in Macon recently welcomed a generous donation of new clothing items from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Members. Boxes and boxes of items such as socks, dress shirts, jackets, undergarments, belts, and an assortment of toiletry items were delivered by the group to the North Mumford Road campus. Not only will these items help meet basic needs among residents, but they will also help emphasize many goals of the Independent Living Program. ILP Life Coach, Sheila Cloyd, will utilize these items to promote life skills in job readiness. Residents will learn appropriate dress for job interviews as well as interview skills. While some may only see clothing, our staff can see tools to empower our youth. In the coming months, we hope to build onto this new partnership with the development of a mentoring program.
Thank you to Alpha Phi Alpha for your generous support.

Bradfield Center receives Holiday Help from LaGrange College RotarAct International
With the recent change in weather, the Bradfield Center has received numerous bags of gently used clothing items. Many times, residents come into our care with little or no clothing at all. These gently used items are used when new residents come into care, current clothing is too small and during times of season weather change. We appreciate RotarAct International students from LaGrange College volunteering their time to help us keep these clothing items organized for Bradfield residents.
We are still in need of certain
items as the temperatures continue to drop.
Consider donating the following:
*Winter Coats & Jackets
*Scarves
*Gloves

Safe Kids Columbus Hosts Training at TRUST Support Group Meeting
On November 19, Christy Hubbard, Executive Director of Safe Kids Columbus, visited our TRUST Parenting Support Group. She spoke with our families about the importance of home safety. Issues addressed included topics such as co-bedding, proper infant sleeping positions, home hazards (strings from blinds, stairs, etc.) Christy also talked briefly about car seat safety. Each family received a free carbon monoxide detector and was able to assemble a safety bag for their family.

Coleman Community Center Staff Members
Put Servant Leadership Into Practice
While many office parties this Holiday Season included a "Dirty Santa" gift exchange or a catered luncheon, the Twin Cedars staff at the Coleman Community Center celebrated differently; by adopting foster children served through the Family Visitation Center. Through their artwork, children created Holiday "wish lists" which were prominently displayed at the Family Visitation Center. Gifts ranging from toys to pajamas were purchased by TCYFS staff members and then distributed at a pizza party at the Coleman Center. Executive Director, Mike Angstadt commented, "Although gifts were distributed earlier this week, staff continue to knock on my door sharing their positive thoughts about taking part in this special party. All would like to ensure this becomes a tradition we celebrate each year." By forgoing a traditional office party, Coleman staff members have gone the extra mile to make a difference in the lives of children and families. |

Proverbs 3:27 says, "Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act."
"The partnership with Twin Cedars has definitely presented the opportunity to be part of doing good for those who deserve it. When I heard that a lot of the boys have no where to go, no home, no one wanting them (not even their mother), it absolutely made my heart ache and as a mother of an only son it is not something I can easily comprehend. However, these boys deserve love, attention, compassion, grace, mercy and forgiveness. I am honored and blessed to be able to participate in doing good for these children."
"It is also most humbling to watch Miss Etta and Kim and all of the teachers and staff members devote their lives to impacting the lives of these children. It takes very special and willing individuals to accept such great responsibility."
"During this special time of year, my prayer is that each and every person associated with Twin Cedars will find abundant joy and exceeding grace as they continue to live as servants--not withholding good... Thank you for blessing my life!!"
