Dear Colleague,

Can you feel it? The change that is underway?

Sometimes ebbs, then advances in a flourish.

From the Arab Spring to the APTA devoting an issue of PTJ to the "psychologically informed therapist", systems changes are bringing more change and at deeper levels around the world. Fortunately we in rehabilitation (def: make fit to live in) are uniquely positioned to facilitate change in ourselves, our communities and our professions.

Through the tools of breath, awareness, movement and education we can offer practical, affordable service in new, exciting and creative responses with our clients that free us from the tired patterns of the past. From depression/anxiety to pain to life performance, if we step up together to claim our power to "reform" ourselves and our practices, then we can proceed with confidence through what promises to be even more change in the months ahead.

I hope you enjoy the resources below and please share them with those that are working to co-create the future of rehabilitation...now!

A Biopsychosocial Approach to Hand and Upper Extremity Rehabilitation
Elsevier Book Cover

From the AZAPTA News Bulletin:

In this year's 6th edition of Elsevier's Rehabilitation of the
Hand and Upper Extremity two-volume Taylor was the lead author of chapter 121, "The Use of Yoga Therapy inHand and Upper Quarter Rehabilitation." The 13-page chapter includes additional video demonstrations of the techniques as well as a case study featuring a patient withpost-mastectomy pain syndrome.
"The yogi's have been writing about and practicing interregional dependence for over 4000 years, to include movement, posture and breathing techniques to address not only biomechanical relationships, but biopsychosocial and spiritual issues," says Taylor, "In the West we only know yoga as stretching. The chapter shares the many deeper practices available to PT's & OT's as well as over 75 references grounding the evidence for the practice."

The formal citation is: Taylor MJ, Galantino ML, Walkowich H, "The Use of Yoga Therapy in Hand and Upper Quarter Rehabilitation." In Skirven, Rehabilitation of the Hand and Upper Extremity, 6th Ed. Philadelphia: Elsevier, 1548-1562, 2011.    Read more...

Yoga and Stroke Rehabilitation...

Dr. Arlene Schmid, PhD, OTR
There was quite a buzz re: the new study my colleague and lead researcher Arlene A. Schmid, OTR, PhD of Indiana University when she presented this exciting news on the findings of their study on yoga and stroke rehabilitation. Her bio is here. The summary is is available on the read more link below. The study made the news on the EIM Daily Dose, Twitter and weekly APTA News Now.
Congratulations Arlene....quite a month as they even named the first Atlantic tropical storm after you as well!

Yoga for End of Life Support...

My wife Jennifer and I co-wrote an article for Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation this spring. We're very exciting about getting the word out on how supportive this process can be not only for patients and their families, but the rehabilitation professionals as well. To learn more, click here.

The Science of Being "Good"...

I had the pleasure of sharing some of the science of being "good" with the 7th-12th graders at my alma mater, Aquin Catholic High School in Freeport IL last year. Later that evening I presented a similar program to parents. The presentation stimulated quite a bit of conversation and interest.

I've posted both the slides handout and the audio podcast to the adult's talk to share with you here.

Where will Matt be in the months ahead...

I'll be traveling in the second half of the year to bring new material to the continuing education landscape. I'm sure I'm not the only one that flips through course offerings and sighs. Please pass the word about these offerings you won't have seen before and let me know if you'd like to bring anyone of them to your area.

MINDFULNESS APPLIED TO MANUAL THERAPY AND THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE: A QUALITATIVE SHIFT

A one-day course for PT's and OT's sponsored by the Ohio Physical Therapy Association. This course will introduce the science of mindfulness, the evidence supporting it, and both the clinical applications and business promotional skills to succeed in the market place. Mindfulness is primarily a qualitative change to what to do clinically and can be applied to any clinical intervention. The approach is transparent to the consumer, avoids offense, and yet it changes everything about the experience. For more info and to register here.

CREATIVITY IN PHYSICAL THERAPY: YOUR VIBRANT, SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODEL THROUGH CHANGE

A one-day course for PT's and OT's sponsored by the Ohio Physical Therapy Association. This course will shatter long-held stereotypes of what physical therapy is and can become in the future. Through the science of individual and organizational change participants will discover how using the simple tools of physical therapy (movement, posture, breathing, awareness/proprioception and education) we as a profession have the power to not only help individuals rehabilitate, but whole organizations and ourselves as caregivers. For more info and to register here.

The DSR Method Approach to Back Pain... Putting Fun Back into Back Pain

Mayo Clinic PT Alumni Assoc Continuing Education, Rochester, MN

This fast paced, active 2-day course draws from the leading mindbody research work developed at the Dynamic Systems Rehabilitation (DSR) Clinic. Here we have fun and leave the clinic invigorated by what we learn and share with our patients using a practical biopsychosocial approach. That's what we mean by "putting fun" into back pain. Both the therapist and the patient leave stimulated with hope and practical tools for meeting pain patterns that often include failed surgeries, pain pumps and long-term narcotic medications. The method requires no expensive equipment... in fact my clinic has no PT equipment at all! You will learn how to incorporate scientific principles into your present practice setting that represent the best of evidence-based medicine ala Butler, Moseley, Hodges, Massery, et al. You will practice extensively with one another and leave with a personalized action plan for using the method on Monday morning. Simple, useful and engaging tools are what you will leave with to make working with your next patient with back pain fun again.

YA 2011

Yoga Alliance Leadership Conference

It is fun to see how the Alliance has grown from those early days when my son Adam and I built their first website. After some reorganization and the fine leadership of John Matthews, the group is taking a positive leadership role in defining Yoga in our communities. I will be presenting the following futuristic look at what Yoga and rehab can become in the future based on my research:

True transformational change through yoga demands we grow past a limited vision of purely physical asana-based classes. During this session, Matthew will share the results of a 2-year study at a large health care organization which demonstrate cultural and qualitative change. The science behind the study, the link between classical yoga and modern change theory for institutions and the "how to" will be presented in a fun, fast paced interactive program culminating in action-step development process to take back to communities for implementation. Participants will learn the language, science and process of approaching institutions at home to engage more lucrative contracts, facilitate more dramatic shifts in consciousness and positively affect community health in a variety of settings.

Hope to see you there!
