Greetings!
coat driveWelcome to our first ever electronic Annual Report.  In an effort to "go green" and save dollars, we have opted to send our Annual Report via email to as many of our donors as possible.  We hope you will appreciate this effort to cut expenses.  Should you want a paper version of our report for any reason, please phone the office.

"Making a difference to children in need or crisis - one child at a time." What does that mean? It means providing a wig for a young girl with alopecia so she can go to school and "fit in". It means giving needy families coats to keep them warm in the winter. It means helping a teenager with no family support pay the fees to be able to graduate from high school and look forward to the future. It means giving help and hope to a child who is in a difficult circumstance through no fault of their own. It's what we do at Mothers Trust Foundation in collaboration with many agencies, organizations, and individuals every week throughout the year.

We are proud to be able to tell you that in 2009, we served close to  2000 children with grants totaling nearly $125,000. The grants ranged from pack-n-plays for babies to gas cards that enable recipients to get to jobs. The lists of items we provide is extensive and always changing. MTF service partnerships with the professionals who bring us requests remained strong throughout the year and according to a year-end survey; we are often the link that keeps a family in their homes and children completing their educations.

The economy did present challenges in 2009 and we were not spared. Limited funding required us to place a moratorium on housing grants in the late summer/early fall, but by the end of the year a hugely successful Betty Bash, as well as heart -warming generosity from a number of old and new donors, brought us to a successful fiscal year end.

We are already involved in a very busy 2010. Our resource fair with our service partners was held in March and the Friends and Mothers Trust Teens have exciting plans for drives and events. The MTF Board is involved with updating the Strategic Plan and the Service Committee continues to meet each Wednesday to consider grant requests. On behalf of the children we serve, thank you for your support and interest in Mothers Trust Foundation.

Sincerely,

Are We Making a Difference?

Each year, we evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of our service program where we make weekly grants in response to requests from our professional partners.  A client satisfaction survey is sent to social workers who are frequent users of our services. We ask whether the benefit we provided made a difference, if we were easy to work with, and what we can do to improve. Here are some of the responses we received in 2009.

"You are the best encouragement to me (Director) and to our families. You are fair and have a heart for little needs. Thanks for being there."

"Thank you for helping my students experience playing an instrument! They would not have had this opportunity without your organization!"

"The only thing that could make them better is if they received more donations. They already help so many agencies and do such a good job. MTF just needs more so they can keep doing what they do in excellence."

"Cribs have been so gratefully accepted by clients as a safer sleeping environment. Our SIDS statistics are decreased since the Back to Sleep campaign was initiated. Plus mom gets a better rest & is able to cope better."

"We are very thankful for your support. Some students could not attend without this financial help. This equals job training, which equals future jobs."

"They were able to improve their quality of life and restored belief in community support."

"They were able to stay in school and finish their programs and ultimately graduate and pursue employment!"

"Families were very appreciative. Students received experiences and memories to last a lifetime."

94% of survey respondents gave Mothers Trust a score of 5 out of 5 when asked to rate the MTF benefit to their client.  93 % responded with a score of 5 out of 5 when asked to rate the ease of working with Mothers Trust. We make an impact!

Mothers Trust Teens Hold Spring and Fall Drives

mtt springThe first MTT "Baby Drive" was held in the spring of 2009. The Lake County Health Department PAGES and Strong Families programs were the recipients of baby and maternity clothes, board and cloth books, children's cd's, toys, bathing supplies and other baby items.

NICASA was also a drive recipient with collections of board games, books, outdoor sporting equipment and games delivered to enhance the lives of the 6-12 year olds who attend daycare while their Moms are attending classes. A caravan of 6 vehicles delivered the goods to these worthy programs making it a very successful first collaboration.
 coat drive
In the fall of 2009, Mothers Trust Teens hosted the  2nd Coat Give-Away for families in the North Chicago School District and surrounding communities. More than 450 coats were collected, as well as hats, scarves, mittens and other articles of warm clothing.
The North Chicago High School boys basketball team helped set up the clothing before the crowd arrived. As you can see from the happy faces, the efforts were greatly appreciated!

  Paying it Forward

More than 100 students from Lake County High Schools Technology Campus went to school on a Saturday in January 2009, to raise money for Mothers Trust Foundation.

Throughout the morning, seven teams competed in a Xbox Madden '09 video football tournament. Culinary students sold breakfast and lunch items they had prepared, a band played in the front entry way collecting tips, and cosmetology students sold haircuts at a discount. Prior to the event, students at the high school gathered cash donations. Through these efforts, the students raised $2,743 for Mothers Trust Foundation.

Mothers Trust Foundation is a long-time supporter of students who attend Lake County High Schools Technology Campus. The Tech Campus provides classes in culinary arts, computer science, auto mechanics, cosmetology, audio visual, and computer graphic design, to name just a few. Students receive critical accreditation and in many cases, earn college credits for their work. But, many students who are accepted into the programs cannot afford to buy the class materials that are necessary. That's where Mothers Trust comes in. In the 2008-2009  school year alone, MTF granted more than $10,000 to benefit 38 students. In the end, the students were more than willing to give back to the organization that gave them so much.

MTF Receives Catholic Charities Special Recognition Award

catholic charitiesMothers Trust values the collaboration with our service partners in our efforts to help clients receive the best possible result. Referrals from and cooperation among agencies allows us to serve our clients more thoroughly and efficiently.

Mothers Trust Foundation was the recipient of a 2009 Special Recognition Award from Catholic Charities. The award recognized Mothers Trust "For Your Dedicated Support of Catholic Charities." Not only does MTF receive frequent requests for assistance from Catholic Charities for families they are helping, but Mothers Trust and Catholic Charities often pool their resources to assist with grants that are too large for either group to finance on their own. Catholic Charities is also a resource for MTF when a family needs more care than we can provide.

First Annual Founders Celebration Held

barbara/rygIn June of 2009, Mothers Trust Foundation held the first annual Founders Celebration honoring retired founder, Barbara Monsor. More than 70 people attended the event at the Gorton Community Center, home to MTF. Barbara thanked those in attendance for helping Mothers Trust Foundation strive to make a difference, one child at a time. "Tonight is really just a thank you to everyone here who worked together to make it happen," she said.

She also voiced appreciation of the community support that helped MTF grow from a small group around a kitchen table in 1998, to a foundation that had granted over $1,000,000 to more than 10,000 children in Lake County since it's inception. Barbara spoke about members who had been instrumental in beginning the foundation and distributed special recognition awards to Heidi Baumann, Colleen Day, Carrie Erzinger, Ginny Fagen, Susie Faucher, Theo Figliulo, Nan Goebel, Cherie Hrusovsky, Lori Julian, Colleen Muldowney, and Allison Pasquesi.

Also recognized for their continued generous financial support of Mothers Trust were the Trustmark Foundation, the Judy Family Foundation, the Garrett Family Foundation, Church of the Holy Spirit,  First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, Dona and Dick Litzsinger, and the Irene and Milton Weed Foundation.

State Rep. Karen May presented Barbara with a special proclamation on behalf of State Sen. Susan Garrett, State Rep. Kathy Ryg and the General Assembly of Illinois stating that "Barbara Monsor made the decision to focus her passion for children, her knowledge of social services, her faith in volunteerism and her desire to make a difference, into a single idea which became the Mothers Trust Foundation."  The evening concluded with a musical presentation by The Golden Strings.

2009 Betty Bash                                In the Beginning...
betty bash...there were women who cared.

Mothers Trust Foundation reached new heights this year at the Betty Bash, held September 18 under the big top tent at Lake Bluff Golf Course. The Betty Bash, an annual all-women's event, attracted more than 270 women and raised over $85,000 for children in need in Lake County. A local taste of Lake Bluff and Lake Forest provided epicurial delights from Bluffington's, Catering by Kenny, The Daily Grind, Deer Path Inn, Francesca's Intimo, The Grille on Laurel, Lovell's, South Gate Cafe, Starbucks, & Sunset Foods. A selection of wines was available courtesy of Terlato Wines International. A fabulous silent auction, a vintage fashion show by Go Fish Vintage with modeling by Mothers Trust Teens, and music and dancing to singer and DJ, Jerry Armstrong completed the evening. The event was chaired by Jeanne Alt and Catherine Driscoll.
