Not All Paint Brushes Are The Same
Choosing the right paint brush for your task will make the job easier and provide superior results. Brushes come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and different filament materials.
Size Matters
The best sizes are 2" to 2 1/2" inch for general cutting in or large pieces of trim. Use 1" to 1 1/2" for the finer details.
A professional paint brush applies a smoother finish with less brush strokes; paint is applied faster and with less effort. Plus, if properly cleaned and stored, the brush will last for years. Inexpensive paint brushes can shed bristles into the paint which results in an inferior finish.
At ColorWorks, we recommend Corona Brushes which are still made by hand in the USA. Corona outsells and outperforms the Purdy brand yearly.
Paint Brush Types
Synthetic brushes such as Polyester, Nylon and Poly/nylon blends are used to apply water based primers and finishes. These brushes can be used with all paints, but are best suited for Acrylic or Latex. They offer good stiffness verses softness for today's thick paints.
Nylon brushes hold and release more paint, and provide smoother finishes. Clean-up is faster and easier than other synthetics. Polyester brushes wear longer and are stiffer than any other filament. A polyester brush is well suited for rough surfaces.
Poly-nylon blends provide longer wear, maximum resiliency, and easy clean up. These are the most common type of brushes on the market.

It's Back to School Time - A Perfect Time for Chalkboard Paint!
A great idea for a child's bedroom wall is to paint a chalkboard. This is easy to do, and fun for the child. You can pick up your chalkboard paint at ColorWorks. A few coats of this paint will create a fun chalkboard surface on the wall that children can write on with chalk, and will wash off easily. Attach a wood frame around it and you have a great looking instant chalkboard. Chalkboards are great for kids to do art, practice reading or spelling, or even play games like hangman.
Parents can help their children with learning shapes, colors, math and reading skills by writing on the chalkboard. They are also fun for parents to use for writing reminders to the children, or drawing funny pictures to make them laugh.
Chalkboard paint is also good for many other surfaces. Try painting a small rectangle of chalkboard paint on a kitchen cabinet or portion of the wall near the phone in the kitchen. You will have an instant message board, or a place for writing shopping lists.
Another idea is to paint the top of a small table with it. The table becomes more than just a workspace for a child, it becomes a place for a creative child to decorate! There are even chalkboard paints and primers that have metal dust incorporated into them, rendering whatever you paint magnetic. So, you have the option of making a magnetic chalkboard surface which can be useful and fun for whatever you are painting.
If you are looking for a gift idea for a child, or a way to improve your home, try making a chalkboard out of an ordinary surface. It will add fun and convenience to whatever you use it for!
