NWTA Awarded $75,000 Grant to Purchase Custom Trail Building Machine

YAHOO! After several months of anticipation, earlier this week NWTA received an award notice to purchase a trail building machine, which will be the centerpiece of our recently launched Trail Development Partnership Program.  The machine, a custom built ST-240 built by Singletrack Tools of North Plains, Oregon, is specially designed for constructing singletrack trails in challenging terrain and steep slopes.  Joe Rykowski, NWTA member and driving force behind the TDPP and the grant application says, "With this award, we'll be putting down our deposit so that fabrication can begin.  In the meantime, we be training certified operators, so that we can be ready to put it to work when we take deliver in the spring of 2011".

The ST 240
NWTA will be working with land managers and bring this valuable tool to get more trail on the ground in NW Oregon and SW Washington.  Look for the ST 240 at the Sandy Ridge Trails or Stub Stewart and other locations next year,  If you are interested in learning more about this program, contact Joe Rykowski.   To donate to the project fund, go here.

To learn more about the ST-240 and our plans to put it to use, come to our monthly meeting next Tuesday September 28th at Lucky Lab SE

Win a Custom Moots Bike and Support NWTA!

by Tom Archer

Local bike shop Cyclepath and renowned builders Moots Cycles recently announced plans to raffle a custom road or mountain bike with the proceeds to benefit NWTA and the Bicycle Transportation Alliance.
Cyclists recognize the Moots brand for hand-crafted bikes made in America, and Cyclepath as a local, high-quality shop, and we're extremely excited about their support.
This MootoX 29er Could be Yours!

Pumptracks on the Brain
by Tom Slovak

Over the past year, we've been talking to just about anyone with an unused piece of land about locating a bike park.  Our efforts are starting to pay off.  Following up on our article featuring our efforts at

Eichler Park in Beaverton, I have great news.  Tualatin Hills Parks & Rec says they are ready to move forward on letting us re-claim Eichler Park and re-building a pumptrack and dirt jumps.

This is great news, and now the work really begins.  Our recently formed Gravity Committee will be taking the lead on this project, and we'll need help dialing in the jumps and berms before taking the first hits - so plan to come on out and bring your ride!

On another promising note, we've been having discussions with Portland Parks & Recreation about building pumptracks and skills parks in the Portland area.  We've been pushing on this for some time now and it looks like we could have another project or two to announce in the next few weeks.  One of the locations is at Mill Park and the others have not been nailed down. BikePortland ran an article about the project yesterday.  You can provide comment on the Portland Parks Website. The Gravity Committee will meet before our next general meeting to discuss these projects, so come on down and and find out how you can help.
