Meet the New Trailer

The Northwest Trail Alliance recently purchased an enclosed cargo carrier in order to facilitate outreach and trail building projects. The 10-foot Continental Cargo trailer, built in Independence, Oregon, will help the organization transport tools, bikes and the wooden skills course as well as provide secure storage at all outreach events. "The skills course, our signature outreach element, is making 10 appearances this year alone," said Will Heiberg, NWTA secretary. "Best of all is that with the big logo on the side, we have our own mobile billboard." Heiberg sends props out to Charlie Frye, storing the trailer at his business, Metalcraft Fabrication.

Help NWTA Secure the ST240 at Black Rock Shuttle Day

The ST240 is nearly in our grasp. NWTA has been recommended for funding through Oregon Parks and Recreation for a $90,000 grant to purchase the trail machine, enclosed trailer, and fund operator training.  But NWTA needs to raise about $18,000 in match funding (we have secured $8,000 so far). Enter the Black Rock Shuttle Day fundraiser.

We're hoping to generate at least $4,000 towards our goal by hosting a continuous bike shuttle service at Black Rock Mountain Bike Area, near Falls City, Oregon this weekend. The event starts Saturday, July 24th after 1pm for those donating $75 or more, and on Sunday, July 25th at 9am for those donating at least $55. Pre-registration is required, Sunday lunch is provided. This is the only shuttle event planned for Black Rock this year, so don't miss out!

Thanks to Black Rock Mountain Bike Association (BRMBA) for allowing NWTA to host this event on their trails and for their tireless dedication working to build and maintain these trails over the past 8 years to make Black Rock Mountain Biking Area into one of Oregon's best DH/Freeride specific trail systems on Oregon Department of Forestry managed public land.

Comments Needed on Proposed Timberline Bike Trails and Skills Park

Your support is needed to ensure plans for a lift-accessed bicycle trails and a skills park being proposed for Timberline ski area. Because the project is on public land, the Forest Service is required to take public comment. Please take a few minutes to type an email of support.

"It is important that the letters have specific topics of support, i.e. economic impacts, jobs, creating sustainable trail riding areas, and Timberline's long relationship as stewards of the land, etc.," says Tom Archer, NWTA president. There is some opposition to the project, so, it's important moutain bikers to weigh in on this project."

Specific points that should be included in your letter:
There is a significant and unmet need for this type of facility in the region
Existing facilities do not meet this need
It is a family friendly outdoor activity
Recreation dollars will be spent locally instead of other states and Canada (Whistler)
Better to have this in a controlled, permitted environment rather than scattered throughout the Mt. Hood National Forest.
Timberline's proposal includes full-time trail care crew, sustainable design, with focus on minimizing impacts to the resource.

2010 Helen's Fest a Huge Success

The inaugural Helens Fest, July 9-11, brought together Evergreen and Northwest Trail Alliance members and mountain bikers with the Forest Service and the Mount St. Helen's Institute. It attracted people from as close as LaCenter, Washington, and as far as Norway. More than 60 people worked, rode and camped in weather ranging from 98-degree heat on Friday to drippy fog on Sunday morning.

Two groups dispersed to the Kalama Ski (and bike) trail and another went high on the Ape Canyon Trail to put in water bars and do brushing and tread repair. A fourth group went down in to Smith Creek while a last group helped ferry supplies out from June Lake for a WTA youth work group with bob trailers that was finishing a week's work party on the Loowit trail.

"I figured this was a good way to try and build bridges with young hikers," says organizer and NWTA Board Member David Anderson. "We were joined by seasonal Forest Service and Mount St. Helen's Institute people who got to rub shoulders with mountain bikers. After the work party several of them rode the Trek demos and one was heard to say that he now understands why we like mountain bike riding."

Support from Camas Bike and Sports, Sellwood, and the Bike Gallery was appreciated, as was the support of New Belgium Brewery and Clif Bar. Diamondback provided the green Helen's Fest 2010 T-shirts. Plans are already being formulated for next year's event.

Kids Skills Courses on the Rise

Bring your kids, (or someone else's) to the Northwest Trail Alliance's new series of youth skills courses. NWTA is hosting a handful of opportunities this summer for kids ages 8-14 to learn more about bike handling and safety in a fun and organized environment. The next opportunity will be at Portland International Raceway on July 26, followed by a kids clinic at the Tour de Tilly on July 31.

"I think passing along our love of the sport and the outdoors is critical in growing our base of riders and thus our ability to advocate for more access to public lands," says NWTA Education and Outreach Director Joel Holly. "The kids at short track have bikes and most of their parents are riders and members so this is sort of preaching to the choir, but also a valuable experience for the kids who are mostly tired of dad telling them how to do it."

A different kids event will help NWTA increase outreach to non-members. On July 27th at 10am we will meet up with kids from the Safe Routes to School program at Gilbert Park Elementary school to go explore Powell Butte on our bikes. Most of those kids have never been mtn biking, do not have a bike and little knowledge of places to ride, says Holly, who encourages everyone to come out and join in this outreach effort.

Email joel@nw-trail.org for more info on the kids programs.
