--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last days to comment on Powell
Butte Trail Plan and Park Center Design Plan.
Powell Butte's Trail Plan is currently under
review and the City has opened it for redesign considerations through a public input process. Mountain bikers
were well represented at the last public forum earlier this month, but we need more folks voicing in to ensure that none of the existing bike trails are lost, but instead that trails are maintained, improved and new singletrack trails get added.
The City is giving the public until Friday, November 27th
to submit comments.
Please review the conceptual designs and architectural style options posted on Portland Parks & Recreation's web site and fill out the online comments form by Friday.
The opening page shows 3 different schemes that
include options for the parking lot, interpretative center, caretaker's
house, maintenance yard and road with detailed questions about trails
and the type of use the trails get.
Some points we ask you to make:
- Select that you bike on Powell Butte (scroll down to the list with various activities and experiences).
- Ask Parks to invest in the Powell Butte trail system
and rework fall line trails for improved drainage, user experience and
safety for all.
- Ask Parks to invest in available IMBA resources
for trail design and collaborate with IMBA trail experts to ensure proper trail construction.
- Implore Parks not to close down any trails,
but instead develop more trails, that are all open to cyclists.
- Ask Parks to explicitly design trails that have proper tread, not pea
gravel or bark mulch. In general, be positive in your comments and express your excitement about the opportunities offered by the new Trail Plan. If you like to get involved in our advocacy and stewardship efforts around Powell Butte, we encourage you to come to the next drop-in Open House on
Saturday, December 12th (10:00am-1:00pm) at the Parklane Christian
Reformed Church (located at 16001 SE Main) or email NWTA Powell Butte Trail Rep Cecily Norris at cecily.norris@gmail.com. Thanks for your help and for spreading the word! Kris Schamp Communications Director Northwest Trail Alliance
