Detox Your Life One Step At A Time... Practical Tips For Living In A Modern World.
Because we live in a polluted world, with these practical tips, you can limit your exposure to toxins and take charge of your health and your environment.
Tip 1: Avoid Phthalates and Bisphenol A in Plastics
Phthalates and Bisphenol A are known as "endocrine disruptors" because they mimic hormones. Unfortunately it is not easy to avoid phthalates as you rarely find the word on the product label except for the occasional "phthalate-free".
1. Read the ingredients. You can identify phthalates in some products by their chemical names or abbreviations.
- DMP (dimethyl phthalate) is used in insect repellent and some plastics.
- BzBP (benzylbutyl phthalate) is used in some flooring, car products and personal care products.
- DBP (di-n-butyl phthalate) and DEP (diethyl phthalate) are often found in personal care products, including nail polishes, deodorants, perfumes, hair products and body lotions.
- DEHP (di-2ethylhexyl phthalate) or BIS (2ethylhexyl phthalate) is used in PVC plastics, including some medical devices.
2. Be wary of the term "fragrance" which is used to indicate a combination of compounds.

| First synthesized in 1891, bisphenol A is now used in a wide array of consumer and industrial products, including polycarbonate plastic and expoxy resins used to line food cans and coat children's teeth. Its ubiquitous use has lead to widespread exposure.
