Last week's PTSA Program, Steering Your Teen Driver, had a great turnout. Our three speakers provided plenty of key information for parents and student drivers alike. Check the Parent Tips section to access information on Driving Contracts, the latest driving laws passed and how they impact your teen driver, and what to expect when you insure your teen driver.
The next PTSA program is scheduled for December 8, 2009, How to Study for Finals. Preparing for finals includes both the student and parent. This program is intended to help your child build successful study habits.

 Steering Your Teenage Driver
Marie Diamond from the PISD Family Education & Guidance Department provided the following Quick Tips for parents on Teen Driving last month during the PTSA program. The PISD Family Education & Guidance Department is available to any family. For questions, contact her at mdiamon@pisd.edu.
- Be the kind of driver you want your teen to be.
- Make sure your teen doesn't get his first taste of freedom behind .the wheel of the car. Give them a chance to exercise and strengthen their "responsibility muscle" in other areas first.
- Consider drawing up a driving "contract" so that the rules and consequences for breaking them are clearly spelled out.
- Decide in advance how experienced teen drivers need to be before they can drive in bad weather...after dark...with friends...
- Take your teen along on a visit to the insurance company and let your agent explain insurance costs and how they are affected by tickets or accidents.
- Think about requiring the teen driver to keep the amount of the insurance deductible in a savings account. They damage...THEY pay!
- Weigh the "who pays for the car" question carefully. Will your teen drive more cautiously with a financial stake in the vehicle? Will part-time employment displace school work and extra curricular activities?
- Remember that taking away the keys to the car can be a powerful disciplinary tool. Use it selectively.
- Remind your teen to always open the garage door before backing out!
- Stay calm. Enjoy your new freedom!

Jasper Student Qualifies for Cross Country Region
 The Plano Senior High School Cross Country Team, including several Jasper students, participated in the District Meet on October 28th.
The Varsity Boys team placed 4th in District, just short of qualifying for Region, but 3 Plano runners qualified for Region by placing in the top ten. Former Jasper student Juan Sanchez is the District Champion, with teammate Sirron Warren coming in 10th, and Jasper student Michael Bain placing 9th in District.
Juan, Sirron and Michael along with Girls Varsity District Champion Rachel Johnson, will be traveling to Lubbock this weekend for the Region Cross Country Meet. Congratulations Michael and good luck at Region. |
Plano West Varsity Golf Wins Rowlett Invitational
Congratulations to the Plano West Men's Varsity team! They picked up their first victory of the season at the Rowlett Invitational at Waterview G.C. on October 21, 2009. Playing the entire day in strong winds and heavy rain, the boys in blue shot their lowest team score in the last two seasons posting a 290 or 2 over par for the team. West topped district rival Jesuit by 15 shots and Plano Senior High by 22 strokes to claim the championship. Sophomore Preston Standley finished 4th with a 73!
