The Jasper PTSA hosted Principal Jeff Gasaway and his staff for a back to school luncheon program on September 1, titled "How to Help Your Child Be Successful at Jasper."  Included in the program were "Tips from Teachers" on how parents can help their student be successful. These included:
  1. Stay involved
  2. Learn with your son/daughter
  3. Treat teachers well and get to know the teacher
  4. Have a good attitude
  5. Establish a good routine for study time
  6. Eliminate distractors
  7. Be aware of long-term assignments
  8. Review all completed assignments
  9. Acknowledge setbacks and move on
Stephany Sipes, Jasper Academic Specialist, and Courtney Washington, Jasper Assistant Principal, had great information on tips for parents and students on how to be successful in high school.  These tips are referenced below in the Student Resources and Parents Tips section of this newsletter, and on the PTSA website.  Thanks to all who attended this program

Schedule Changes
What to do if your student needs to make a schedule change.

Changing from Honors class to Regular class
If you have a student that is changing from an Honors class to a Regular Class, the deadline for a level change is the end of the first six weeks of the semester, October 1, 2009.

Your student should:

1.  Pick up the schedule change form from their counselor.
2.  Student/parent should complete the form.
3.  Current teacher must sign the form.
4.  Student returns completed form to the counselor.

The counselor will make the needed changes to the student's schedule to accommodate the request, which in some cases, may mean changes to the student's current schedule.

Can your student drop a class?
Students cannot drop a core class; however, they can request a schedule change for a legitimate reason.

If your child is interested in a schedule change, the following procedures are suggested:

1.  Student should discuss concerns with their counselor.
2.  Parent should contact or conference with the teacher.
3.  Paperwork must be completed with the counselor.
4. A two or three week trial period is suggested following parent/teacher conference.
5.  Schedule changes only after the first three steps completed and
issues persist.

Thanks for the great turn-out for the first PTSA program.  Jasper Principal Jeff Gasaway and his team presented an overview on how our children can succeed at Jasper.

You can find many of the items discussed at the links below and on the Jasper PTSA Website.
large midnight riderRead It Forward!
Jasper High School, in conjunction with Shepton High School, has a new school wide reading program called Read It Forward, based on the movie Pay it Forward.

At least five copies of Notes from the Midnight Driver by Jordan Sonnenblick were issued to each study hall. Students read the book, sign the inside cover and pass the book on to a friend or classmate. Once a student, teacher, or parent has read the book, a short survey can be taken on the Read It Forward mypisd page.  Readers can sign the Read It Forward wall in the library and pick up a prize.  There will be other related activities to follow.

The purpose of Read It Forward is merely to have fun and share the joy of reading. The books should not return to the library, but should be continually passed throughout the community.

Thanks to the Jasper High School National Honor Society, 600 copies of the book were purchased for the Read It Forward project.
