GMO Noose

Greetings and Peace!

May this find you all enjoying and appreciating your many blessings.

Right now a lot of attention is on the labeling and use of Genetically Modified Foods (GMO) and rightfully so. Hence, this edition is just to give you a BASIC overview. I read numerous websites and found the Non-GMO project's site to be the most helpful and easy to read and navigate. Explore it when you get a chance.

There are numerous issues that GMO foods bring to mind but if I had to choose just 3 these would be the ones that peak my interest:
  1. GMOs have not been shown safe to eat. Do you know how many products have been let onto the market as safe only to be recalled in the not-so-distant future?
  2. GM and Non-GM cannot coexist due to cross-pollination.  Once GMOs are unleashed it will be extremely difficult to find non-GM foods.
  3. GM companies cannot be trusted. Numerous studies have shown that they put profit over people. GM seeds allows them to virtually control the food supply through patents on seeds.

Like I said, there are countless other issues so learn more about the topic and pick your own top 3. Or you may not think GMOs are a bad thing at all. So... .

Of course, I would encourage you to learn even more and take action. You may be wondering how you can take action. I will start with what I believe are the first 4 steps and there are probably more but here goes:

  1. Educate Yourself
  2. Do not buy GMOs
  3. Educate others
  4. Link up with others to help champion the cause. (This step can be as simple as signing a petition, voting, or even joining a group or organization that fighting for this particular cause).

In the links section there is a really good documentary and extremely helpful websites. I highly recommend reviewing the product list. If you have an iphone or ipod touch you can also get the NON-GMO IPHONE APP.

I also added a few comics because a picture is worth a thousand words and I couldn't figure out which one to pick. These were some of my favorites.

I hope you enjoy this edition.

Sincerely,

 Erika Muhammad

Facts from the Non-GMO Project
What are GMOs?
GMOs, or "genetically modified organisms," are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit.

Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers' and consumers' rights.

Are GMOs safe?
Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In nearly 50 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale. Increasingly, Americans are taking matters into their own hands and choosing to opt out of the GMO experiment.

Are GMOs labeled?
Unfortunately, even though polls consistently show that a significant majority of Americans want to know if the food they're purchasing contains GMOs, the powerful biotech lobby has succeeded in keeping this information from the public. In the absence of mandatory labeling, the Non-GMO Project was created to give consumers the informed choice they deserve.

Do Americans want non-GMO foods and supplements?
Polls consistently show that a significant majority of North Americans would like to be able to tell if the food they're purchasing contains GMOs (a 2008 CBS News Poll found that 87% of consumers wanted GMOs labeled). And, according to a recent CBS/New York Times poll, 53% of consumers said they would not buy food that has been genetically modified. The Non-GMO Project's seal for verified products will, for the first time, give the public an opportunity to make an informed choice when it comes to GMOs.

How common are GMOs?
In the U.S., GMOs are in as much as 80% of conventional processed food. Click here for a current list of GMO risk crops.

What are the impacts of GMOs on the environment?
Over 80% of all GMOs grown worldwide are engineered for herbicide tolerance. As a result, use of toxic herbicides like Roundup has increased 15 times since GMOs were introduced. GMO crops are also responsible for the emergence of "super weeds" and "super bugs:' which can only be killed with ever more toxic poisons like 2,4-D (a major ingredient in Agent Orange). GMOs are a direct extension of chemical agriculture, and are developed and sold by the world's biggest chemical companies. The long-term impacts of GMOs are unknown, and once released into the environment these novel organisms cannot be recalled.

How do GMOs affect farmers?
Because GMOs are novel life forms, biotechnology companies have been able to obtain patents with which to restrict their use. As a result, the companies that make GMOs now have the power to sue farmers whose fields are contaminated with GMOs, even when it is the result of inevitable drift from neighboring fields. GMOs therefore pose a serious threat to farmer sovereignty and to the national food security of any country where they are grown, including the United States.

Muhammad Farm's Calendar
"We Must Become Productive"

Let us support the production on Muhammad Farms through our Ministry of Agriculture Annual Calendar. Wheat has been planted, 470 acres, and is being harvested and milled for our benefit. The whole wheat, in its original non-enriched form, is a very good source of all nutrients naturally produced in wheat, like manganese and iron. Let us be found supporting that which supports our independence.
