Facts
About Growing Green Beans in Your Home Garden
Green
beans are one of the most popular vegetables to grow at home because
they are easy to take care of and the plants produce lots of beans. One
of the most important facts about growing green bean in your home garden
is that you will need to first soak your seeds for about 30 minutes.
This helps the outer shell soften so the bean can sprout easier. While
the seeds are soaking, you can make in a trenches in your garden about
an inch deep. Then place the soaked green bean seeds in soil about
6-inches apart. Lightly cover the seeds. Water the plants about once a
week at the roots. In about 8 to 10 days they will start
sprouting. You can harvest the beans when the
pods are crisp and firm and snap easily when broken in two. Be sure to
harvest the beans when the plants are dry and before the pods start
bulging in order to retain all the health benefits of green beans.
Handle the plants with care and they will continue to flourish.

How To Pick Green BeansLook for beans
with a snap. If you can tie the green bean in a knot, it's not fresh.
Instead, look for green beans that snap when you bend them.
Make sure the beans are hidden. If you can see the beans
through the pod, this means that the product is old and the pods have
shriveled. You should only see a vague bump where the beans are hidden
under the pod.
Choose pods that have a bright green color. Green beans
should have a beautiful green color. Just like other types of produce,
the color will tell you a lot about the freshness of the product.

Great, easy green bean recipe
Chowhound (jodymaryk)
I just whipped up a batch of my favorite recipe for green
beans that I have been doing for a few years and always have rave
reviews from guests. It is soooo easy and quick and reheats great so
you can do it even a day ahead of time. (Sorry I don't have exact
measurements but I just kind of throw in and taste). I would love some
more quick, easy and tasty green bean recipes if anyone has some! Fresh
green beans whole, peeled cloves of garlic (maybe three or four per
pound? I like more but I am garlic crazy) butter lemon juice salt/pepper
I put my fresh green beans and garlic cloves in a large
saucepan. Fill with cold water, bring to a boil and cook about 10
minutes or until green beans are tender but not overcooked. I like mine
on the more crunchy side. Drain in a colander, but don't rinse
with cold water. Pick out the whole garlic cloves, through back into
saucepan and mash with a fork. Add butter, let melt. Add lemon juice,
salt/pepper then toss green beans back in and toss. That's it. Takes
longer to cook the green beans then anything else. I swear they are a
no fail recipe.
