Happy New Year!

May 2010 be a year we all continuously reflect on our blessings and have a spirit of gratitude. I want to thank all those who contribute to the various facets of the this Buying Club that help to make it a success; from the person with the vision to the . . . i can't think of a "little" job in this.  We all play an important role in our success. For those that have yet to contribute outside of getting a bag, I encourage you to do so, you won't regret it. Contact Majeedah Muhammad to let her know how you can help.

Thank you Majeedah for preparing last month's feature recipe (see picture below).  And thank you to Nadia (age 7) for tallying the results of the survey.

This month we are featuring foods that ward off illness. If we can maintain, or improve, our health it will make it much easier for us to focus our attention on accomplishing goals set for the new year.

Thank you for reading.
May God bless you with a peaceful and prosperous new year.

Your Sister,

 Erika Muhammad
'Superfoods' Everyone Needs

Experts say dozens of easy-to-find 'superfoods' can help ward off heart disease, cancer, cholesterol, and more.

Imagine a superfood -- not a drug -- powerful enough to help you lower your cholesterol, reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer, and, for an added bonus, put you in a better mood. Did we mention that there are no side effects? You'd surely stock up on a lifetime supply. Guess what? These life-altering superfoods are available right now in your local supermarket.
"The effect that diet can have on how you feel today and in the future is astounding," says nutritionist Elizabeth Somer, author of Nutritionfor aHealthy Pregnancy, Food & Mood, and The Essential Guide to Vitamins and Minerals.
"Even people who are healthy can make a few tweaks and the impact will be amazing," Somer says. "I'd say that 50% to 70% of suffering could be eliminated by what people eat and how they move: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension can all be impacted."
You don't need specific foods for specific ailments. A healthy diet incorporating a variety of the following superfoods will help you maintain your weight, fight disease, and live longer. One thing they all have in common: "Every superfood is going to be a 'real' (unprocessed) food," Somer points out. "You don't find fortified potato chips in the superfood category."

Spaghetti Squash & Broccoli

MMMM, I made the squash and broccoli dish and it was (as Sis Victoria says) delish!  My husband gave it a big thumbs up and my Sister said it was excellent.  Thanks for the recipe.  We should have a contest "from the bag" with Members making dishes with foods from their bags and having judges vote and select the best dish(es), with prizes for the winner(s).
