Avalon Celebrates its 10th Anniversary in March

Avalon Restaurant opened its doors
on March 3rd, 2000 with financing help from Avalon LogoRREDC.  Beverley Wolfe and Ron Garrido envisioned a restaurant that offered fine dining with professional service and high quality cuisine featuring local produce.

Over the past 10 years, Garrido and Wolfe have built an exceptional reputation for their restaura
nt and catering.  Recently Avalon received its 7th consecutive Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and has been included in the upcoming "Conde Nast" Traveler magazine.

Fiber
The California Public Utilities Commission voted to award a $4.4 million grant to support the building of a new fiber optic line connecting Humboldt County to the internet backbone via the PG&E utility right of way along Highway 36.

The company proposing the project, IP Networks, has partnered with local wireless provider, 101Netlink and PG&E  to install 121 miles of new fiber cable and use point-to-multipoint fixed wireless technology to serve underserved (dial-up) communities along Highway 36 corridor from Wildwood to Bridgeville.

Water District To Hold Workshop On Water Resource Planning

In the last issue, we introduced Humboldt Bay Municipal Water Di
strict's (HBMWD) Water Resource Planning process. This is Wateran important effort aimed at addressing two issues which have long-term implications for our community.

The loss of the pulp mills has triggered significant increases in water rates throughout the community, a
s well as challenges and risks to the District's water rights, which are held for the benefit of the community.

The HBMWD Board of Directors formed an Advisory Com
mittee to help address this important issue.  Based on significant input from the public and the District's municipal customers, they have developed "Evaluation Criteria" which they will use to evaluate options regarding the District's water and future potential uses.

The next phase of the planning process - "Generate Options" - is now underway.  To support this phase, the District is hosting a Water Workshop on Tuesday January 19th (from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Wharfinger in Eureka). The workshop will feature a number of informative presentations, and will invite public input, around the four general options available to the District to use its water and address the increased water rates.

Given space limitations, registration is required - please visit the District's website (HBMWD.com) or call (443-5018) to obtain an agenda and register.

Please attend, or encourage someone else to - this is the time for the community to participate and help address this important issue!
