RREDC Welcomes Gregg Foster Back

RREDC is excited to announce that Gregg Foster has been hired to be its executive director.  Foster previously served as the commission's executive director between 1999 and 2007.  "I am very pleased that Gregg has returned as executive director; and I am certain that with his previous experience he will be able to work with the board of directors to make sure that RREDC remains a vital player in the regions economic development community," said Sherman Schapiro, RREDC Board Chair.

For the past two years, Foster was employed as Director of Business Development at Lost Coast Communications (KHUM.KSLG, and KWPT).  He currently serves as the president of the North Coast Small Business Resource Center, is on the board of directors of the Humboldt County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Eureka Main Street.

Update on Delta's Air Travel Service

RREDC wants to thank everyone who supported us bringing Delta Airlines to Humboldt County.  Without your support we wouldn't have been able to convince Delta to initiate their service here.

As was reported earlier, Delta's current plans are to offer their service to Salt Lake City only in the summer months.  This decision was made following a period of low ridership in the first quarter of 2009.  However, since that decision was made, we have seen significant increases in the use of the flight.  Please note however, that while service to Salt Lake City has been temporarily suspended, you can still book a flight from the Arcata-Eureka Airport via Delta Airlines.  You will be placed on a Horizon Air plane and connected via Los Angeles.

Why is this important?  It means that Delta Airlines has not left our market and desires to maintain a presence here.

Therefore, our challenge is to stay engaged with Delta Airlines to work to expand their service beyond the current three month schedule for Salt Lake City.  RREDC considers this a high priority and will be working closely with the Aviation Division to convince Delta to add to their service.

To achieve this, we will need the support of the community.  We will not be asking for financial support as in our last effort.  Rather, we will be asking that you express your support through letters, emails, and other statements.  Our goal will be to show that this is a viable, year-round market for Delta Airlines.

So, stay tuned.  You will be hearing from us soon as we start this new initiative.

RREDC Business Spotlight:
        Eel River Brewery Scotia Expansion

RREDC Staff 2009

Eel River Brewery, specializing in organic beer, has been doing quite well since expanding their brewery operations by moving into a 22,000 square foot facility in Scotia.

Back in 2007 when Eel River approached RREDC they were in the process of expanding the brewery and were almost finished building the new facility in Scotia.  RREDC's loan allowed Eel River to expand their brewing and sales operations.

Eel River Brewery brews eight types of beer, four being organic, and distributes their product throughout the west coast. They were one of the first distributors of organic beer in Humboldt County in 1999 when they introduced their award winning ERBC Certified Organic Pale Ale.

To taste some of Eel River Brewery's award winning specialty beers visit the Eel River Brewery Taproom and Grill in Fortuna or check out their website at www.eelriverbrewing.com
Important HBMWD Meeting Regarding our Current Water Situation

Over the next year, the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District will be developing criteria, generating options, and evaluating those options to assist the HBMWD board in developing broadly accepted and understood recommendations for long-term planning around water rights and rates.  Among the challenges: the closure of the pulp mills and the loss of  their significant financial contribution to fixed costs;  tens of millions of dollars of infrastructure needs anticipated over the next two decades; and a state law that says the district may lose water it doesn't use.

The HBMWD invites the public to participate in FLOW, a community discussion about long term planning around water rights and rates.  There will be three meetings the public can attend:

October 13 at Azalea Hall in McKinleyville
October 14 in the D Street Neighborhood Center in Arcata
October 22 at the Wharfinger Building in Eureka
Meetings will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Each meeting features an overview of the water district's history and current situation and discussion of impacts, community values and decision-making criteria.  Two additional rounds of public meetings and an educational water workshop will be scheduled next year.

Participants are encouraged to participate throughout the process. Background information and updates are available at www.hbmwd.com. Go to the bottom of the page and click on Water Resources Planning.

Update on Local Broadband

Redwood Coast Connect

We are now past the first deadline for broadband infrastructure application submission to Rural Utility Services (RUS) and National Telecommunications and Information Agency (NTIA).  Applications for infrastructure from the region were all submitted by private sector companies and, in total, aspire to provide broadband services to approximately 95 percent of the unserved and underserved residents in the region-if they all get funded.  A matrix of all known applications affecting the region can be reviewed at www.redwoodcoastruralaction.org/

Round two of funding will open sometime close to the end of the year.  Unfortunately we will likely not know about the outcomes for first round applications before we need to be deep in second round planning and application preparation.  In the next couple weeks activity around broadband strategy planning will resume.
