because of our finicky weather. Yet from what we can tell, this year promises to be a great vegetable season and with it, a chance to become a vegetable garden master. By following a few simple tips, you could become the neighborhood tomato guru!

Remember too, this could be on your deck or patio, since container gardening works extremely well in the Northwest. Tomatoes plants prefer lots of space for their roots and generally the more space you give them, the happier they will be. So consider no less than a 5 gallon nursery container or similar size pot for each tomato; a whiskey barrel could support two or possibly three plants.
Plant the tomato deeper than it is in its current pot, up to at 1/3 of its height. We recommend you do not snip off the lower shoots, as that area

will grow additional roots and therefore provide better nutrient uptake. (Note: If you are trying our new grafted tomatoes, this does not apply. Keep the graft above the ground level, much like a fruit tree.)
Use good soil! This is not the place to scrimp when growing fresh and healthy food. A cupful or two of garden lime mixed into soil will "sweeten" the soil, as well as the fruit. Tomatoes love sweet soil! We also recommend Mykos Mycorrhizal Organic Inoculate when planting vegetables. The inoculate clings onto the roots of

the plant and helps the plant uptake additional nutrients for healthy growth. Water when the soil is dry to the touch. Water the soil, not the plant! And for absolutely the best nutrient feeding program, an organic fertilizer like Fox Farm, will make you look like a pro! (Hint: check out the coupon for Fox Farm products below)
With a good location, high quality soil and the use of great organic nutrients, you will produce the finest and healthiest crop of tomatoes you have ever tasted. Check out our huge selection of your favorite tomatoes here at the nursery, and pride yourself on a job well done!
