Getting a head start on preparing your garden in the northwest can sometimes be a bit challenging. What works best depends on your individual site as well as the weather. Ideally you will have a south or west exposure, with soil that is well draining and filled with plenty of organic material. Soil and air temperatures in spring are especially important to our gardening success.

Outside air temperature is something that we can do very little about, but by utilizing an enclosed cold frame or small heated greenhouse we can raise both day and night temperatures considerably. Soil temperatures can also be raised using various techniques. Raised beds can increase soil temperature by 8-10 degrees and are common in the Northwest. In Europe and many other places of the world, gardening with vegetable bins and containers placed in sunny locations and balconies is also quite popular. In many Asian countries, low laying hutches or covered hoop houses are utilized for early spring plantings. Some gardeners will also use black ground cover to absorb the suns energy while controlling weeds at the same time. There are many natural ways to "help" out nature, and in turn, get an fast start on your vegetable garden.
