Our Roses Have Arrived

20% Off for our Preferred Gardeners.

"We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses". Abraham Lincoln

It's as true today as it was then. For many people roses are the ultimate Redoutepaintinggarden plant. Long lasting, fragrant and surprisingly easy to care for. Today many of the finest roses are grown on disease resistant root stock, selected exclusively for local climates. Our select roses are grown in Oregon. The Minter selections this year include some very special newer varieties, such as the new Oprah Legend, as well as many of the proven winners for our area.

Don't be fooled by the  price of roses at the local hardware store or grocery store. Check for the grades. Grade 1 plants have three or more canes that are about 3/4 of an inch in diameter and have no more than 3-4 inches between the graft union and the top of the roots.

Rose Grades
They will also have a large, well-developed root system. Grade 1 plants must be 2 years old when harvested from the field. These are generally premium-priced rose plants. Grade 1 1/2 roses have two strong canes and with good care will catch up to Grade 1 roses. Grade 2 roses are the "bargain" or "cheap" roses. They are often plants with very small canes. The majority of our plants at the nursery are grade 1, with 3 or 4 strong, healthy canes. Come see the difference. Enjoy the beauty, fragrance and yes even the thorns of our high quality rose bushes and rose trees.

Caring and Pruning Your Rose Bushes

Now is the time to prune your existing rose bushes. There are plenty of on-line sites that will show and tell you how to prune roses and this is the perfect time for rose pruning.  First look

for any dead or crossing canes.  They should be removed an inch or more above the crown. Next simply cut back your canes at least 1/2 or as much as 2/3 of their current height. Do a slanting outside cut to allow any rain or moisture to flow off. This cut should be done just above a bud. Next clean up any debris around the bush, including the old leaves. Once the rose starts to break dormancy, it will be time to work organic, slow release rose fertilizer into the soil around each rose bush. Finish by topping off with some organic compost, which helps to retain moisture as well as reduce weeding.

We have a good selection of our favorite fertilizers and natural nutrients that will take your roses to the"next level".  Ask our staff for their recommendations.
