Nursery News
After The Storm
Its odd to see little snip-its of snow still here and there, even after our recent
warm days. This is the Northwest, and only February, so be cautious about what you buy or put into your gardens. The hardy primrose is a delight this time of the year, bringing much needed color to the garden, and safe to plant. But be very careful pushing the envelope on most annuals, they still need another 6-8 weeks before the soil and air temperature warms and the last freeze is behind us. Here at the nursery we are still observing winter hours. We are closed Monday and Tuesdays until March 1st. Our hours are 11 AM to 4 PM Wednesday through Friday and
11 AM to 5 PM on weekends.
We sustained damage to several of our cold frames from the snow and ice build up, but felt fortunate that our West & East side greenhouses were generally spared any significant damage. Most greenhouses and cold frames are not designed to withstand the 8-10 inches of snow and ice we received.
We were without electricity for 18 hours, during the coldest hours of the storm, which meant no heat for the greenhouses. After numerous time extensions from City Light, we decided we needed to hook up our new generator. Although not nearly big enough for the main boiler, it was sufficient for the foliage house, store and several Quonset heaters. After a fair bit of turmoil and anxiety, we can happily report our spring plants survived just fine, even the fuchsias and other tender annuals look great.
