Caring for Your Poinsettias
Native to Mexico, Poinsettias, Euphorbia Pulcherrima, can be found in many parts of the world, growing as a small or medium size shrub. They can be seen thriving alongside roads as well as in public and private gardens throughout warmer regions. A tradition during the holidays, they make an ideal centerpiece or accent to your décor. Like many tropical and subtropical plants they also make great house plants.
Caring for your new poinsettia is easy! Ideally, place it where it receives the highest amount of indirect light while maintaining a temperature between 65 and 70 degrees. When the soil feels dry to the touch, remove the plant from the wrapper or pot cover and water thoroughly, allowing it to drain completely before putting the cover back on. Your Goal? Not allowing the roots to sit in water, while maintaining even moisture. Poinsettias appreciate room temperatures above 55 at night. These simple steps will keep your flowers beautiful well into the New Year.
Want to continue growing as a house plant? After the bracts or leaves begin to fall, cut the plant back about half way. In early spring new leaves will emerge as the natural light levels increase. Although not required, use of additional lighting such as grow lamps can help induce new growth earlier in the season. Begin fertilizing lightly at that first growth. Then in early July you may want to "pinch back" to help keep the plant short and compact. Beginning in October, poinsettias require 14 hours of daily darkness to begin bract coloration (think northern Mexico in October). Do this by placing it in a closet or covering with a box at night. With patience, care and proper nutrition, by next Thanksgiving your poinsettia may once again come alive with color! Good Luck! Come into the store and pick up a Holiday Guide to Poinsettias for more tips and information.
P.S..Poinsettias are not Poisonous! According to a study by The Society of American Florist and Ohio State University. The Poisindex Information Service stated that over 500 leaves ingested by a 50 pound child would demonstrate no toxicity. Please look on-line for more information.
