Bulbs are extremely versatile and are especially impressive in mass plantings, along garden paths and around water features. Many Northwest gardeners are using spring bulbs in woodland settings and you may even see the early blooming crocus emerging from their lawns for a spectacular spring display.
So why plant spring bulbs in the fall you may ask? Why not not wait until spring? Well just like trees and shrubs, Fall Is For Planting! Spring bulbs need time to begin establishing roots before the soil warms and the flower growth begins. Experts will tell you that the soil temperatures should be below

50 degrees for fall bulb planting. The stored energy in the bulbs or corms need a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks of cooler temperatures to begin their biochemical process. After that initial cooling period, root growth begins in late fall and early winter, and then, in early spring when the soil finally begins to warm, the bulbs start pushing upward with top growth. And remember, a touch of organic fertilizer in the spring will almost always insure fabulous spring color!
