Celebrating Mothers is a tradition that has roots tha go back to our very earliest mythological, Greek and Roman days.  From Isis to Rhea to the Greek celebration of Hilaria, the goddess Cybele, we have honored our feminine creators.  During later times, in the early 1600's, an English tradition began to be known as "Mothering Day", which allowed servants one day off during Lent, to visit their families. This later became a celebration that also honored "Mother Church".

When the pilgrims arrived in the Americas, life became extremely harsh. With very limited time, and the desire to break away from earlier traditions, many celebrations fell away. Not until the activist Julia Ward Howe, who was credited for writing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and in 1870, the "Mother's Day Proclamation", was the idea revived.  Distraught by the carnage and senselessness of the civil war, Ann Marie Jarvis struggled to create "Mothers Friendship Day", to reconcile families fighting on both sides of the civil war.

Anna Jarvis

Her daughter, Anna Jarvis, continued the cause and later became known as the modern day founder of Mother's Day . She has been credited with the tradition of gifting flowers on that day.  Anna Jarvis worked tirelessly with churches and politicians until 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson finally declared the second Sunday in May as "Mother's Day".  From that day, the tradition of honoring our Mothers was carried around the world, and today almost every country of the world recognizes and celebrates our mothers' sacrifices, as well as the inspiration and love they bestowed upon each one of us.
