Starting Your Vegetable Seeds

Adventurous this year? Want to save money and sow your own vegetables from seed? If so, now is the time to start some of your favorite vegetables indoors.  Many gardeners get great pride and joy growing their tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables from seed. It may be especially important to those who want to be assured of purely organic production. At Minters we feel the ideal window for sowing tomatoes and peppers extends from late February through March. Our first rounds in the greenhouses are already germinated, ready for transplant and are looking fabulous.

You may also want to do your first indoor round of lettuce, spinach and mustard greens this month. Other vegetables to consider are broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Swiss chard.  Ed Hume Seeds, our favorite local supplier, prints great growing suggestions on their seed packets tailored to the Northwest gardener.  Check the back of seed packets as well as the seed companies web sites for additional in-depth information and tips.

Each garden and each season in our area is different and only by experimenting, and with trial and error, will you get to "know" your garden. Be patient, perfection takes time!  Gardening is both an art and a science, each playing off the other. Gardening can be extremely rewarding, whether you choose to grow from seeds or seedlings and success comes in the trying.  And not to fear, if your seeds don't behave quite the way you expected, we will have you "covered" with vegetable starts available here at the nursery throughout the growing season.  Just go out and have fun with seeds!

Some vegetables should be planted directly into the garden this month.  Onions sets, potatoes, asparagus and rhubarb are available in the store. Blackberries, raspberries, blueberries & grapes are perfectly fine to plant out also.  And its time to directly sow your peas unless your soil is extremely wet. In that case you may want to delay until the soil has time to dry out some. Spring is almost here, so it's time to start those gardens!

In The Nursery

Citrus

Our  huge selection of Citrus is available and ready to take home! They look great! Many are bearing fruit and fragrant blossoms.

Australian Finger Lime, Meyer Lemon, Calamondon Oranges, Variegated Pink Lemon, Buddha Hand, Dancy Tangerine, Rio Red Grape Fruit,
Nagami Kumquat, Mexican, Kieffer and Bearss Limes too.

We suggest leaving them in their current pots for now, but slipping them into new decorative pottery for your spring deck or patio.  They will need protection from freezing. Wait until after this years fruiting cycle to transplant. Remember to ask about citrus fertilizer and our watering suggestions.
