Spring Flower Bulbs
Onions, Garlic, Potatoes, Rhubarb & Berries Too!
With spring just around the corner, the nursery is coming alive with daily arrivals. Just in, is our spring collection of bulbs, roots and seeds. Selected with the northwest climate in mind, we have some excellent choices that will be perfect for your garden.
Remember those rhubarb pies, cobblers and sauces? My favorite was Mom's rhubarb, cherry and apple cobbler, with a perfect balance of tart and sweet. Well suited for our area, and easy to grow, Canadian Red and the Victoria rhubarb are great sources of Vitamin C and K, Calcium and Potassium . Truly a Northwest signature plant, more rhubarb is grown commercally in Washington and Oregon than anywhere else in the US! Check below for a link to an excellent rhubarb website, with great information and fabulous recipes.
Thinking of growing potatoes this year? Our selection of seed potatoes (solanum tubersom) include Yukon Gold, Russet Burbank, Red Norland and even Banana! Back to the basics here. Potatoes are naturally low in calories, high in vitamin C, with no fat or cholesterol. (just watch that butter!)
Fresh green onions right from the garden bring life your salads, sauces and stir frys. Our great selection of onion varieties can be used for fantastic green onions or to grow into full size tasty treats. Or both! Its OK to snip 1/4 to 1/3 of the individual green stalks from each onion plant to use as greens, while the bulb is continuing to mature. Cut the individual stalks about 1 inch above the bulb. Onions can be planted in window sill boxes, containers or right into the garden. Mix or match red, white and yellow onions.
Raspberries and blackberries are a great addition to the edible garden. Closely related, (genus rubus), our thornless blackberries and raspberries thrive in the Northwest. Although red is the most common raspberry color, you may may prefer the late season Fall Gold or the purple-black Jewel. Our other garden edibles include California or Italian Garlic and the perennial, Purple Passion Asparagus, that will provide you years of good eats! Remember now is the time to plant many spring flower bulbs too. Like gladiolas and dahlias, begonias and amaryllis bulbs, as well as the fun elephant ears (alocasia), the eucomis and the crinums. Many varieties are limited in quantity, so shop early. February hours are Wednesday through Sunday 11 AM until 4 PM. On March 1st we return to our 7 day schedule of 10 AM to 6PM. |

These beautiful woodland flowers can be found in colors ranging from white to pink and even purple and generally bloom throughout the winter months. A must have for the sophisticated garden.
| | Red Twig Dogwood Hedge | Another sure fire winter bet is the Red Twig Dogwood. This deciduous shrub has beautiful red bark, and can add a sunset feel wherever it is planted. Our yellow twig dogwood adds just the right contrast when planted nearby. Of course, Camellia Sansanqua, the Yuletide Camellia, with its beautiful red flowers and elegant dark green leaves, is always a smash hit. It
| | Camellia Sananqua-Yuletide | blooms early in the winter months, is evergreen, very hardy, and loves either full sun or part shade. Love those hummingbirds? The Mahonia x Charity is one of their winter favorites. Very hardy and winter blooming, with its attractive foliage and flowers, it can be planted just outside your window to enjoy the comings and goings of our native hummingbirds all winter long. Witch Hazel, sp. Hamamelis, is another all time favorite of ours. Sometimes called winterbloom, witch hazel is a another must-have shrub for fragrance and color in the winter
| | Hamamelis Japonica-Mollis | garden. Pair it with winterberry (Ilex verticillata) and hellebores for interest throughout the winter. And don't forget about the Sarcoccoca, another fabulous evergreen shrub with very fragrant flowers. It thrives in the well drained soils and loves part shade to shady areas. Plant these near your favorite garden path or entry way.
These are only a few of the many wonderful plants that will add texture, color and that warm feeling to your winter landscape. Primroses are here and are ready to be brought into your garden mix, other early spring bloomers that will arrive in the following weeks. Enjoy your winter gardens! |
