A Short History of Pumpkins

The fabulous pumpkin, which has become a such a huge part of the American Pumkins Galorehistorical lore, is a type of squash, from the genus Cucurbita, and is considered a fruit. The oldest known findings of squash are seeds that date between 5500 and 7000 BC from southern Mexico. It was from here that the seeds were spread by theJack O Lantern earliest settlers and later by the conquistadors throughout the world. Squash was a staple in native diets long before the pilgrims arrived in America. The American Indian taught the  pilgrims how to survive by introducing them to squash. The native Americans called squash askutasquash (a green thing eaten raw), although we know the early settlers cooked pumpkins in many ways, sometimes just in the coals of a cooling fire. History says that the pumpkin never made it to the first thanksgiving, but was eaten at the second thanksgiving in abundance. The pumpkin was so important to those early pilgrims there was a poem written about it:

For pottage and puddings and custards and pies
Our pumpkins and parsnips are common supplies,
We have pumpkins at morning and pumpkins at noon,
If it were not for pumpkins we should be undoon."

For pottage and puddings and custards and pies
Our pumpkins and parsnips are common supplies,
We have pumpkins at morning and pumpkins at noon,
If it were not for pumpkins we should be undoon."
