FALL TREE & SHRUB PLANTING

We are fortunate in the Pacific Northwest to be able to plant pretty much year around as long as the ground is not frozen solid! And fall really is one of the most excellent times to plant trees & shrubs. Not only is it great for the gardener because of the cooler weather, but the trees and shrubs love it too! Plants are under less stress, top growth is slowing and the temperature swings from day time highs to evening lows are moderated. Did you know the roots in our area will generally grow all winter long? In the fall the soil temperature remains relatively high while the soil maintains an even moisture level, providing for almost ideal root growing conditions.

Many Gardeners believe late summer, and through fall, is possibly even better than traditional spring plantings. With roots growing most of the winter and becoming firmly established, trees and shrubs are ready to burst into action in the warm spring weather. Although we do not recommend heavy fertilizing in the fall plantings, an application of transplanting hormones or a product like Super Thrive in the fall with help the roots with just a little extra boost.
