Sow Your Tomato Seeds Now
 Tomato Starts
Now is the time to begin your tomato seeds indoors.  For best results we suggest sowing them in a seed tray, over a heat mat and using fluorescent or grow lights. You should use good quality sterile growing medium, like Black Gold germinating mix, planting the seeds 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. Place a thin layer of soil over the seeds and water lightly.  For best results use a clear dome over the seed tray. The dome will help to stabilize humidity and temperature. When the seeds reach about 3/4" tall, remove the dome.

Continue watering lightly, misting occasionaly, and keeping high intensity light on the plants until the plants are about 2" tall. Its then time to transplant into larger pots. Once transplanted, keep the plants under a grow light or strong in-direct light using 1/2 strength fertilizer weekly until about the second week of May.  They are then ready to go outside. You may want to put them on a sunny porch near the house for a few days before final planting to harden them off. Remember to keep them watered! Tomatoes love sun, so be sure to find the sunniest spot possible, such as raised garden beds or large containers. Soil temperature, sun and proper nutrition are keys to success. Be sure to use stakes or tomato cages to support the plants as they grow. Growing your own tomatoes can be fun and rewarding!

Tip:  Seed germination kits, accessories and lights are 30% off  in the nursery.  An investment in a good seed germinating kit and lights will pay for themselves many times over because they will last many seasons and can be used throughout the winter for herbs and other fun plants.

Easter LiliesLily7

Lilium longiflorum, the Latin name for the Easter Lily, is native to the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan. The cultivar most widely grown today is called "Nellie White." This was named by a grower named James White, and was named after his wife.

There are less than a dozen farms in the California-Oregon coastal region that produce most of the Lily bulbs for the Easter season.  After at least 3 years and sometimes 4 years at the farm, the bulbs are shipped to local greenhouses. Producing blooming Easter Lilies in the greenhouse is no easy task. They are considered one of the most difficult crops to grow, competing with poinsettias. Since Easter falls on a different day each year between March 22 and April 25 (the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox), timing the blooming cycle takes great care and constant vigilance.

In the home, lilies prefer coolish temperatures of 60-65 degrees, high indirect light and water when the soil is dry to the touch.  If the pot is wrapped in foil, remove it when watering to allow the pot to drain thoroughly before putting it back in the foil. Remove the golden yellow anthers before they shed and discolor the white flowers.  Once the bloom begins to fade, cut it off to so you can enjoy the other blooms.  Even after the last bloom fades away continue to water!

Remember, after all danger of frost is past you can plant these bulbs in your garden to enjoy for many years to come.  They may bloom again this summer, but most likely will wait until the following year.

Tip:  We have many Easter Lilies in our greenhouse to choose from. We will  even wrap them and put on a bow for free!
