 Re:treads    Recycled Tires

Retread Pottery
We found them! After numerous requests and a lot of searching, they are here! Re:Treads™ is a collection of flowerpots, totes and containers made from recycled tires. Its a great re-use for tires that may otherwise end up in landfills. These great looking pots are produced and hand crafted in Pakistan. The tread is removed from the old tires (which is recycled into mulch), the steel belts are removed and recycled, and the remaining rubber is hand sewn using traditional leather-working tools. Stress points are re-enforced with galvanized rivets or bolts. Each pot has a similar yet unique design. They come in 7 different shapes and sizes from an 8" pot to a 25" basin with handles.

These pots will last for many years and will blend beautifully into your garden or onto your deck.  The dark color will help retain soil heat giving your plants an edge in our sometimes cool days and evenings.  We think this is a great new idea to help conserve resources as well as encouraging the further use of recycled materials.

Fabulous Flowering Cherry Trees In Bloom Now!
Minters Cherry Trees
Weeping Snow FountainNow is the time to come in and view the huge selection of Flowering Cherry Trees.  Most are in full bloom in colors from pure white to dark pinks. The flowering cherry is generally one of the first trees to bloom in early spring and right now they are in their time of full glory!

Enjoy the Kwanzan or Royal Burgundy with Tibetica Interstem (cherry bark stems). The pure white Weeping Snow Fountain and Contorted Weeping Snow Fountain are essentials in many gardens.  With choices like the gorgeous Whitcombi and legendary Mt Fuji there is surely one that will fit beautifully and become a welcome sign of spring for many years to come.

Tip:  Staking newly planted trees.  It may be necessary to stake newly planted trees, but remove the stake once you feel the tree is able to support itself.  The gentle rocking back and forth will actually encourage the little hair roots to develope more naturally and more quickly.  A robust root system is essential for the health and stability of any tree or plant. Consider a rooting hormone or other natural product to stimulate growth when planting.
Starting Your Vegetable Seeds

Leafy Vegetables: - Leaf crops like spinach, lettuce, chard, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers plus many others can be started indoors from late February into March. Cucumbers, squash, pumpkins plus the other warm weather vegetable can be started indoors in late March and April.
Carrots

Root Crop Vegetables: - Sow the seeds of all root crops like carrots, celery, beans and peas directly into the garden. You will need to wait until the soil warms up and all danger of frost is passed. Early to Mid April is usually a safe time for seeding them outdoors.

Any kind of container will work for seeds: trays, flats, pots, old egg cartons, cut-off milk cartons, etc. Just make sure they are very clean. An all-purpose houseplant type potting soil can be used for starting the seeds or better yet use something like Sunshine Germinating mix. Make sure the media is sterile. When done, cover the seeds with a very thin layer of soil.

Check the back of seed packs for sowing instructions and for the right spacing, depth, sow time and other good information. We highly recommend Ed Hume seeds which are selected for the NW

Keep the newly seeded pots or trays in a warm spot where the temperatures averages 65 to 72 degrees day and night. Select a spot where there is bright light during the day, but no direct sunlight. In fact, the seeds will germinate even better if they are kept under grow lights. Space the lights about 12 to 15 inches above the soil. If you have one, electric heat mats designed for seeds will provide perfect temperatures and greatly enhances germination.

Using room temperture water for the first two or three days helps keep the soil temperature up and enhances germanination. After the new seedlings have formed a couple of sets of true leaves they need to be potted or spaced so there is room for the root structures to form properly. Remember, do not rush to get them outdoors, be sure all danger of frost has passed.
