When most everyone accepted the theory that the world was flat or maybe round like a dinner plate, Christopher Columbus was committed to finding a better approach to doing his job. 

 

Columbus was positive that he could amass data that was more accurate than what the people of his day were accepting as factual.  So much so, that he was willing to risk his life to prove that facts needed to be upgraded.
