If a Surface is Clean, It's Sanitary

Remove Soil To Remove Germs

Cleansed is a synonym for the word Sanitary...

Nature has made sanitation simple...

Wash away germ-filled soil to ensure healthy surfaces.

Janitorial and sanitation marketing people work hard at trying to make us believe that we must kill every germ around us by using their disinfectant or sanitizer chemical.

Let's review 3 advertisement claims:

1. Kills 99.99% of germs.

The test for the kill claim was performed in a controlled laboratory setting.  It began with a measured amount of soil with only germs that could be killed by the advertised chemical.   Then, a calculated amount of chemical was introduced to ensure that all germs were killed.

The laboratory test result was probably 100% germ kill, but, because of legal ramifications, it becomes 99.99%.

The real world is not a laboratory setting.  The exact amount of soil and the number of germ types on a surface are unknown.  The chemical maker has no idea of the targets facing its product users.

If a disinfectant detergent is used as a washing solution, soil will be left behind attached to the disinfectant's sticky after-film.  Germs that are resistant to the chemical, or germs that survived the wash, will quickly multiply in the left-behind soil being held by the disinfectant's film.

When soil is removed by a residue-free detergent solution, there would be virtually no soil or germs.  New landing airborne germs would have to wait for new soil to arrive before being able to multiply.

2. Kill germs using a disinfectant spray or wash?

The idea may seem to make sense.  But, you must realize that a disinfectant chemical works only if the surface is washed free of soil and germs before the disinfectant solution is applied.   If a disinfectant chemical is applied into soil, the germ-rich soil will contaminate the chemical preventing it from being effective against targeted germs.

In random soil, there will most always be germs that are resistant to the disinfectant chemical.  The resistant germs will begin populating the soil by filling the micro spaces that were vacated by any killed germs.

Even when done correctly, the germ-killing residual film left by the disinfectant treatment remains effective only for a few hours and/or only until contact is made by germ-carrying soil.  The first contact contaminates and totally negates the disinfectant residual film's germ-killing ability.

3. Attack the MRSA virus, nosocomial infection threat, and allergy triggers with disinfectants.

However depicted, it will be about live microorganisms.  Microorganisms that make living things sick are called germs.  When too much soil containing too many germs exists on a surface and the germs make it into a body, the body's immune system may become over-powered by the high number of a particular germ and the body falls ill.

A clean surface with a few germs is a safe surface even if some germs find their way into a body.  The germ count will be low and normal immune systems will be able to effectively control germ propagation.

Facts for Custodians to Remember:

·  If It's Clean, It's Sanitary

·  Removing Soil, Removes Germs

·  Our Immune System Makes Drugs to Kill Germs

·  A Fresh Water Rinse Is A Germ Removal Step
·  Germs Cannot Live Outside Of A Host (Soil)
·  Cold Water Helps Soil Float Away From Surfaces

The key to custodial success is using chemicals that:
1. Work in cold water.
2. Emulsify and release 100% of the soil.
3. Leave surfaces squeaky-clean and film-free.
4. Work quickly within the time frame of a custodian's cleaning movements or an autoscrubber's speed.
