Educational Forum to Precede Fall Bull Sale
(SCIP Phase One)
You are invited to join us Sunday evening, Sept. 25, beginning at 5:00 PM. Tom Brink, guest speaker from Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, will discuss factors affecting feeder cattle value and review the completed first phase of the Southern Carcass Improvement Project (SCIP). The first calf crop has been harvested at National Beef and a comprehensive look at the entire project will be presented. The research design results from collaboration between Kansas State University, Virginia Tech and Gardiner Angus Ranch (GAR). The project focuses on Southern-origin beef cows, representing typical bos indicus-influenced genetics most often found in southern states. The cows, sourced from Georgia, Mississippi and Texas, and relocated to GAR, serve as the common genetic denominator for the study. Go to www.gardinerangus.com to read the updates posted to date. |

GAR Retained Ownership Customers Continue to Post Record Premiums
Our commercial customers continue to prove the added value of GAR genetics. While input cost have never been higher, the opportunity to add value on multiple grids has never been better. We featured long-time commercial customer Randy Browning in 2011 and illustrated the dramatic improvement made since he began using GAR genetics several years ago. Randy forwarded the close outs on his most recent pen. The 109 head pen earned an $88.07 per head premium. More than 96% of the pen graded USDA Choice or better and had an impressive 64.20% average dressing percentage. More than 54% qualified for Certified Angus Beef®. Even better news was the entire pen of cattle's feedlot performance. The cattle had a dry matter conversion of 5.73:1, posted ADG of 3.79 lbs. and finished in 150 days on feed.
Another long time GAR cattle feeder, commercial customer and friend, Rex McCloy, Stinnett, TX, shared the results of a pen of 215 head of home raised steers. The steers earned a $71.90 per head premium. The pen finished in 138 days on feed and gained 4.05 lbs. per day. More than 84% graded USDA Choice and higher while 56.07% qualified for Certified Angus Beef® or Black Canyon Premium®. We will continue to post the reports shared with us by our customers on www.gardinerangus.com. We encourage you to check frequently for updates. The value added using high accuracy genetics, excelling in the feedlot and qualifying for branded premiums equates to real dollars on our customer's bottom line. |
