Many Gardiner Angus Ranch customers share our common philosophy regarding beef production. Those customers are professional cow-calf producers allied with the GAR philosophy and committed to the discipline required to produce seedstock with added value throughout the food chain. As the beef industry makes scientific progress through the development of molecular breeding values and marker assisted EPDs, Gardiner Angus Ranch and its Allied Producers will aggressively use the data to develop new and better programs, offer more services and continue producing superior Angus genetics. Southern Carcass Improvement Project Weaning Update
The first group of calves from the Southern Carcass Improvement Project (SCIP) was weaned in early November. Fifty-nine head of embryo transfer calves, April- and May-born calves are now being backgrounded and grazed on wheat pasture. Calves will be placed on feed as yearlings early in the spring at Triangle H Cattle Feeders, Garden City, KS. Initial analysis:
(1) Angus-sired calves had shorter gestation lengths (-8.3 days) vs. Southern-sired calves.
(2) Angus-sired calves had lighter birth weight (-9.6 pounds) vs. Southern-sired calves.
(3) Angus-sired calves had heavier weaning weight (+6 pounds) vs. Southern-sired calves.
"We are making good progress on the SCIP research," says Mark Gardiner. "This project is primarily designed to be a carcass merit comparison, but we did expect to see growth-curve differences as well. The Southern-sired calves were quite a bit heavier at birth, but they did not out-weigh the Angus-sired calves at weaning." Click here for the complete update.

Customer Proves Value of GAR Genetics
Randy Browning can do a lot more than simply assume he is making genetic progress using Gardiner Angus Genetics. This Appleton City, Missouri producer has extensive records which document sizable herd improvements during the past decade plus. From a herd that started out with significant Continental-breed influence 15 years ago, Browning has consistently incorporated GAR genetics (regularly purchasing bulls and commercial females), transforming his cow herd into a productive bovine factory capable of both excellent feedlot performance and consistent carcass premiums. His calf crops today feed better and grade better, leading to value-added improvements $111.50 per head greater than when he started keeping records in the second half of the 1990s.
Mark Gardiner recalls his first conversation with Randy, "Randy asked how much performance he would have to give up to improve carcass merit. His recordkeeping proves what we have always believed-we can have it all!" We are extremely grateful to Randy and many other GAR customers who choose to be profitable through value-added genetic improvements. (Click here to read about Randy's documented progress.) |
