No Hate
Stop the Hate Rally
State Capitol of West Virginia (river side)
Thursday, April 8, 5:30 PM

Calling people of good will to act as non-violent agents of healing in our community. Join people of all faiths, backgrounds, ages, races, genders and political affiliations in our chorus of reassurance and care for victims of hatred and intimidation. Coming from all walks of life, we will stand together to say, in a collective voice, that there is no place for hate and violence in our community. While our voices will be strong, our message will be peace.

If you cannot attend the rally but wish to proclaim loud and clear that West Virginia is no place for hate, pick up a free yard sign of the message above at the WV Chamber of Commerce (1624 Kanawha Boulevard East) or post the full page insert from tomorrow's Charleston Gazette and Daily Mail in your window or place of work.

Their struggle to hold the family together while taking advantage of an opportunity to make a better life outside the city is at the core of this drama that still has great relevance in the 21st century. Winner of the NY Drama Critic's Award as Best Play of the Year.

Seeking artists of all ages (Kindergarten - Adult) to submit their artistic interpretations of eliminating racism for a juried art exhibit to be displayed April 27 - May 2 at the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences.

This 2nd annual contest and exhibit is part of the YWCA's Stand Against Racism Day on April 30 - the theme of which is "Racism Hurts Everyone." Individuals are encouraged to submit artwork based upon this theme or simply anything that embodies the message of eliminating racism and celebrating diversity. A panel of three judges will choose a winner from each age category based on the piece's creativity and representation of "eliminating racism." stand against racism
on friday, april 30Stand Against Racism

Over the weekend, we received the official Governor's Proclamation that April 30, 2010 is Stand Against Racism Day across West Virginia - thanks to the work of the YWCA. Stand Against Racism is an annual event of YWCAs nationwide, and will be the first of its kind in the greater Kanawha Valley. We are inviting like-minded organizations to share our vision of eliminating racism once and for all in our community by becoming a participating site and hosting your own "stand" on Friday, April 30, 2010.

Your event, public or private, can be as elaborate as a public rally or as simple as asking your employees to observe a moment of silence or sign a pledge against racism. We provide the ideas and tools (at no cost to you) - you decide your own way for your organization to "stand." Find out more information HERE.

Our strength is in our numbers. For more information, contact the YWCA of Charleston's racial justice program coordinator Nell Fleming at nfleming@ywcacharleston.org
or (309*) 825-9133.

Soroptimist International of Charleston

Soroptimist

Soroptimist International of Charleston hosted its 22nd annual fashion show on March 27 to benefit the YWCA Sojourner's Shelter - helping us kick off this beautiful spring season in style! Check out the event photos HERE.

Soroptimist, derived from the Greek word meaning "the best for women," is the largest international service organization of professional women of all ages working together for personal and professional growth and services to others. This year, the club celebrated 54 years of service to the Kanawha Valley. Since the event's inception in 1989, this fashion show has raised more than $58,000 for homeless women and families at YWCA Sojourner's.

In addition to holding various donation drives, Soroptimist also makes a difference in our community by offering its annual Women's Opportunity Award (a $750 scholarship to a woman who is furthering her education while serving as her family's primary financial provider), and the Violet Richardson Award (a $150 award recognizing young girls ages 14-17 who are engaged in volunteerism in their communities and/or schools).

Thank you, Soroptimist, for your outstanding dedication to empowering women in our community throughout the years. Special thanks also to Ric Cochran for emceeing the event, Jeanne Cochran for providing live music, Cache, Chico's and Kelley's Mens Shop for providing the fashions, all of the models who volunteered their time and talents, and the numerous individuals and companies that donated door prizes, auction baskets and flowers.

To learn more about this worthy organization, call local chapter president Margo Maynor at (304) 949-4435 or email siahq@soroptimist.org.
